Wirecard Overview

About Wirecard

Wirecard is a payment processor and financial services provider headquartered in Munich, Germany. It offered online payment acceptance, acquiring and risk management for merchants, and issued prepaid and credit cards through its own bank and card-issuing subsidiaries. The group grew from a small payment services business into a listed company with operations in Europe, Asia and the Americas, partly through the acquisition of regional processors and portfolios. Its customers were merchants, banks and card programme managers, and it earned processing fees and commissions on transaction volumes. The company was founded in 1999 and went public through the former InfoGenie. It later became insolvent after disclosing that cash balances it had reported did not exist, and its businesses were sold in separate pieces.

Description
SO1 is a Berlin software company, also known as Segment of One, that provides personalised price promotions for retailers and brands. It was founded in 2012 by Raimund Bau and Sebastian Gabel and uses customer data analysis to decide which discounts to offer to which shoppers, with the aim of increasing sales while limiting unnecessary markdowns. The company describes itself as a pioneer of personalised discounting and sells its software to retail and consumer-goods clients on a service basis. Its platform ingests purchase histories and loyalty data, scores shoppers on their likely response to an offer and then proposes individual coupons and prices through retailers' apps and checkout channels. The company is headquartered in Berlin and worked mainly with food retailers and consumer brands in Germany.
MyGate is a Johannesburg-based provider of financial services and payment solutions in South Africa. The company offers secure platforms for processing multiple payment methods, including cards, EFT, and mobile wallets, tailored for merchants in retail and e-commerce. Founded in 2005, it integrates with major banks like Standard Bank and Absa, emphasizing fraud detection and PCI compliance to support transactions across Africa.
Supr is a software company that built an online shopping tool for small online merchants. Its widgets let sellers place purchasable product listings directly inside social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, so that customers can buy without visiting the seller's own website. Supr was based in Cologne, Germany, and employed about twenty people. The product was aimed at small and medium-sized internet retailers that wanted to sell through social channels rather than operate a full online shop. Wirecard had already processed Supr's online payments before the company was acquired, and the team joined Wirecard to work on new e-commerce products. Its widgets embedded product listings in social posts and handled the checkout step. The company served small sellers who had no technical team of their own, and it charged for the service on a subscription basis.
Citigroup's prepaid card unit delivered institutional prepaid card services across the United States until its sale to Wirecard AG in 2017. The business handled prepaid solutions for corporate clients seeking flexible payment options for employees and customers. Headquartered in the US, the unit focused on multi-purpose reloadable cards and customized programs for sectors like retail and incentives. Post-transaction, operations transitioned fully to Wirecard, marking Citigroup's exit from this segment to streamline its consumer banking priorities.
