Tsinghua Unigroup Overview

About Tsinghua Unigroup

Tsinghua Unigroup (紫光集团), renamed New Unigroup in 2024, is a Beijing-based technology and semiconductor conglomerate. Its main subsidiaries include the mobile chip designer UNISOC, the networking equipment maker New H3C Technologies, the listed chip company Guoxin Micro, the cloud provider UniCloud, Unisplendour and the French smart-card component maker Linxens. It earns revenue from chip design and sales, networking, server and storage products, cloud services and system integration for government, enterprise and consumer-electronics customers. The group was founded in 1988 as Tsinghua University Sci-Tech General Company, a spinoff of the university's Tsinghua Holdings, and took the Unigroup name in 1993. Under chairman Zhao Weiguo it bought Spreadtrum in 2013 and RDA Microelectronics in 2014, took 51% of H3C in 2015 and founded the memory maker YMTC in 2016. After bond defaults in late 2020 it entered bankruptcy reorganisation in July 2021, and in July 2022 a consortium led by Zhilu and JAC Capital took full control through Beijing Zhiguangxin Holding, investing CNY 60 billion.

DateStageInvestorsRaisedValuationRev. MultipleDeal Summary
Jul-22Undisclosed stageWise Road Capital$787M$8.2BTsinghua Unigroup, a Chinese semiconductor and IT components manufacturer backed by Tsinghua University, underwent bankruptcy restructuring approved by Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court around July 2022. A consortium led by Wise Road Capital and Beijing JianGuang Asset Management (via Beijing Zhiguangxin Holding) took over the company in a proposed $8.17 billion deal, described as an acquisition providing a lifeline to subsidiaries like Unisoc and YMTC. The restructuring followed financial distress, with the consortium investing significant funds (one source mentions 60 billion yuan) to assume control, displacing prior management attempts. Wise Road Capital acted as a lead investor, aligning with state-backed efforts in semiconductors. Post-restructuring, Tsinghua Unigroup retained stakes in key chip firms like Unisoc (35.23%).
