Coolpad Group Funding Rounds

DateStageRaised FromRaisedValuationRev. MultipleDeal Summary
Jan-18Undisclosed stagePower Sun Ventures$300M-Coolpad, a Shenzhen-based Chinese smartphone maker, received $300 million in funding from Power Sun Ventures, a family trust controlled by Chinese property magnate Chen Hua, announced on January 18, 2018. The investment followed Coolpad's separation from financially troubled partner LeEco, which had previously sold over half its stake in the company. Power Sun Ventures became Coolpad's largest shareholder following the transaction. The company stated the capital would be deployed over several years to expand its artificial intelligence capabilities and shift from a mobile phone manufacturer to an AI-focused technology company, with plans to develop AI applications across communications, health, education, and gaming sectors. At the time of the funding announcement, Coolpad CEO Jiang Chao indicated the company aimed to move up from entry and mid-tier smartphone positioning to the high-end market segment, leveraging AI technologies. The company had been producing 34 million smartphones globally annually and generating approximately $3 billion in revenue each year. In India specifically, Coolpad ranked among the top three smartphone brands on Amazon.in and had launched eight smartphone models in 2016. For the six months ended June 30, 2018, Coolpad reported unaudited revenue of HK$2,390.2 million, though the company was navigating prior financial challenges, having not yet filed its 2016 results due to ongoing auditor discussions regarding going concern issues.
Jun-16SecondaryLeEco$135M$11BCoolpad Group Limited is a Cayman Islands-incorporated company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (stock code 2369) that manufactures and sells smartphones, including 4G and 3G Coolpad models, along with wireless application services. In June or July 2015, LeEco, through a Hong Kong-based smartphone subsidiary, invested HK$2.73 billion (RMB 2.18 billion) to acquire an 18% stake in Coolpad, becoming its second-largest shareholder and implying a total company valuation of approximately HK$15.17 billion. This transaction positioned LeEco to expand its hardware ecosystem, including smartphones sold via its LeMall platform. Coolpad's consolidated revenue for the year ended December 31, 2016 totaled HK$7,969.5 million, down 45.7% from HK$14,667.9 million in 2015, primarily due to business restructuring, intense competition in China's smartphone market, and reduced sales volumes. Revenue from 4G Coolpad smartphones was HK$7,346.1 million in 2016, a 42.6% decline from HK$12,790.5 million in 2015, driven by a 25.6% drop in units sold and a 28.5% decrease in average selling prices. 3G smartphone revenue fell sharply to HK$315.7 million from HK$1,595.9 million.
Jun-15Undisclosed stageLeEco$353M$2BCoolpad Group Ltd. is a Hong Kong-listed smartphone manufacturer that became closely affiliated with LeEco through a series of investments starting June 28, 2015. On that date, a LeEco subsidiary invested RMB 2.18 billion (equivalent to HK$2.74 billion or approximately $353 million USD) to acquire an 18% stake in Coolpad. This made LeEco a significant shareholder in the original design manufacturer (ODM) focused on mobile devices. In mid-July 2015, LeEco purchased additional shares, increasing its ownership and eventually becoming the largest shareholder with a majority stake, integrating Coolpad as an official subsidiary to boost LeEco's subscription services and smartphone sales. The initial June 28, 2015 round positioned LeEco with 18% ownership after injecting around $350 million, as reported across multiple sources. Subsequent transactions in 2015 and 2016 saw LeEco founder Jia Yueting spend a total of CNY3 billion to acquire 28.9% of Coolpad shares from founder Guo Deying, further solidifying control. Coolpad's integration with LeEco aimed to leverage synergies in the competitive Chinese smartphone market, but both entities later faced financial difficulties. Coolpad suspended trading in March 2017 after failing to release 2016 results on schedule. By 2019, Jia Yueting sold his Coolpad stake for HKD808 million (about USD103 million) at 0.9 HKD per share to repay debts to China Merchants Bank.
