Apr-19Undisclosed stageUK Climate Investments (UKCI)$40M-Max Enviro Energy Solutions Pvt. Ltd., also referred to as CleanMax Solar, is an Indian solar power company focused on developing rooftop solar projects and a nationwide network of solar farms for corporate clients. In April 2019, it raised Rs 275 crore (approximately $39.4-39.6 million or £30 million) in equity from UK Climate Investments (UKCI), a UK government-backed fund managed by Macquarie Asset Management, to support expansion in renewable energy projects. At the time, the company's operating capacity had grown from 24 MW in FY2016 to over 500 MW in FY2019, serving 120 corporate clients with plans to reach 300 by 2022. UKCI's investment marked its fourth commitment in developing economies, aiming to mobilize private capital for green growth. The funding came from Warburg Pincus-backed CleanMax, highlighting its prior private equity support and international ambitions, including portfolio expansion in the Middle East and entry into Thailand via a subsidiary in 2019. CleanMax has received awards like the India Green Energy Award in 2018 and was recognized for transformational infrastructure projects. Post-investment, the company pursued operations in Southeast Asia and achieved milestones such as water neutrality for parts of its portfolio and carbon neutrality by 2023.
Nov-17Series AInternational Finance Corporation$15M-Clean Max Enviro Energy Solutions is an Indian renewable energy company providing rooftop and utility-scale solar solutions for commercial and industrial customers. In November 2017, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private investment arm of the World Bank, invested $15 million in the company through compulsorily convertible debentures. This was the IFC's first equity investment globally in a grid-connected distributed generation firm. The investment proceeds were designated to fund construction of greenfield solar projects, including a 30 MW facility in Karnataka and a 30 MW facility in Tamil Nadu. This represented the second major funding round for CleanMax in 2017, following a $100 million equity investment from Warburg Pincus in July 2017. At the time of the IFC investment, CleanMax had operating capacity of approximately 24 MW and was planning to commission over 250 MW of solar projects within three years.
Jul-17Undisclosed stageWarburg Pincus$100M-Max Enviro Energy Solutions Pvt. Ltd. is a Mumbai-based developer of rooftop and open access solar projects, primarily serving corporate clients in sectors like automotive, food and beverage, and IT. It held a significant market share in India's rooftop solar segment, with around 3% of open access solar capacity as of March 2017 and 24% in rooftop per Bridge to India. By mid-2017, it had over 100 MW of installed capacity, up from 45 MW earlier and 8 MW in FY15, including Karnataka's first 30 MW open access solar farm and additional C&I farms exceeding 60 MW total. An order book of 200 MW was reported as of October 2017. In July 2017, Warburg Pincus announced an equity investment of up to $100 million (Rs 645-455 crore via compulsorily convertible preference shares through Yellow Bell Investment Ltd.), with the first tranche of Rs 97.5 crore infused that month, to fund project execution, expansion into Middle East and Southeast Asia, and solar-plus-storage solutions. This followed a $2.58 million seed round in 2015 and a planned $15 million from IFC around the same period. CARE Ratings noted the infusion in FY18 as providing necessary capital for current projects. Financials for FY16 (audited) showed total operating income of Rs 127.3 crore and PBILDT (profit before interest, leases, depreciation, and tax, akin to EBITDA) of Rs 15.5-16 crore. FY17 audited figures improved to total operating income of Rs 268 crore and PBILDT of Rs 31 crore. The company later grew operating capacity to 760 MW by 2021, with FY21 EBITDA at Rs 252 crore, and Warburg Pincus exited via a Rs 1,650 crore deal in 2021 to Augment Infrastructure, yielding around 18% IRR and roughly doubling the invested amount.
