Philippine Airlines Funding Rounds

DateStageRaised FromRaisedValuationRev. MultipleDeal Summary
Jan-19Strategic investmentANA Holdings$95M$1BPhilippine Airlines (PAL), the flag carrier and largest airline in the Philippines, operates through its parent company PAL Holdings Inc. PAL runs extensive hub networks from Manila, Clark, Cebu, and Davao to 43 international destinations across Asia, North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Australasia, plus 33 domestic routes. It is the only airline connecting the Philippines to the U.S. and Canadian East Coast, New Zealand, Brisbane, New Delhi (by April 2019), and London, with more routes to the U.S., Japan, China, and Australia than competitors. In January 2019, PAL was expanding its fleet to nearly 100 aircraft and 80 destinations amid product improvements, earning recognition as the World's Most Improved Airline for 2019. On January 29, 2019, ANA Holdings Inc., parent of All Nippon Airways, announced it would invest $95 million to acquire a 9.5% stake in PAL Holdings from Trustmark Holdings Corporation, owned by the Lucio Tan family, PAL Holdings' largest shareholder. The deal, completed later, valued the 9.5% stake at $95 million, implying a roughly $1 billion post-money valuation for PAL Holdings. ANA positioned the investment as a strategic move to capitalize on Asia's growth, the Philippines' economic potential, and deepening ties with PAL, including existing code-sharing, ahead of PAL's 70th year serving Japan. The investment supported PAL's growth era, enhancing business relationships between the premier Japanese airline group and the Philippine flag carrier. ANA Holdings saw PAL as well-positioned for rising air traffic and regional leadership in ASEAN. No specific round size beyond the $95 million stake purchase or use of funds were detailed beyond general expansion. Post-investment, ANA's stake faced dilution after PAL's 2021 Chapter 11 bankruptcy and 2022 emergence with a $2 billion debt restructuring, but the 2019 transaction remained a key strategic alliance step.
