Nov-17Series AGates Ventures; Knoll Capital Management; Purple Arch Ventures; Luye Pharma Gr; Innovation Endeavors; Hercules Capital; Alumni Ventures; Eager Info Investments LTD; HT Capital$11M-Exicure, Inc., a Skokie, Illinois-based company spun out from Northwestern University, develops gene regulatory and immunotherapeutic drugs using three-dimensional Spherical Nucleic Acid (SNA™) constructs to treat inflammatory diseases, genetic disorders, and cancer. The nanotechnology platform, based on research by Chad Mirkin at Northwestern’s International Institute for Nanotechnology, enables spherical nucleic acids to enter cells without triggering an immune response. In November 2017, Exicure closed an approximately $11.2 million subsequent private financing tranche led by Luye Pharma Group, with participation from Eager Info Investments LTD, Knoll Capital Management, and Purple Arch Ventures. This extension brought the total round to approximately $31.5 million, following an initial $20.1 million close in September led by Katalyst Securities and Mark Tompkins, with AbbVie Ventures and others. The round coincided with Exicure’s reverse merger with shell company Max-1 Acquisition, after which it changed its name to Exicure. Proceeds from the financing supported research, preclinical, and clinical development of Exicure’s programs. Luye Pharma Group, a global pharmaceutical company focused on oncology, cardiovascular, metabolism, and central nervous system therapeutics, highlighted the potential of Exicure’s nucleic acid therapies.
Sep-17Undisclosed stageRathmann Family Foundation; Craig Mundie; Bill Gates; AbbVie; Mark Tompkins; Katalyst Securities; Patrick G. Ryan; Tempus; Eric Lefkofsky; David R. Walt$20M-Exicure, Inc., a Northwestern University spinout formerly known as AuraSense Therapeutics, develops three-dimensional Spherical Nucleic Acid (SNA) constructs for gene regulation and immunotherapies targeting inflammatory diseases, genetic disorders, and cancer. The nanotechnology platform, based on research by Chad Mirkin, enables cellular entry without immune response triggers. On September 27, 2017, Exicure completed a reverse merger with shell company Max-1 Acquisition Corp., which then renamed to Exicure, Inc., and closed a $20 million private placement. Investors included AbbVie Ventures, Bill Gates, Eric Lefkofsky, Craig Mundie, Rathmann Family Foundation, Patrick G. Ryan, David R. Walt, Mark Tompkins, and Katalyst Securities LLC, with net proceeds allocated to research, pre-clinical and clinical development, and general working capital. The round represented the first tranche of a larger private placement, later extended by $11.2 million in November 2017 led by Luye Pharma with Eager Info Investments and Knoll Capital Management, plus Purple Arch Ventures, bringing the total to $31.3 million. Prior funding included $14.8 million in October 2015. The board retained key figures like Chad A. Mirkin, C. Shad Thaxton, David R. Walt, and others post-merger. The offering was conducted under Regulation D to accredited investors on a reasonable best efforts basis. Exicure's early milestones included Series A ($7.5 million in 2011) and Series B ($18.8 million in 2012) financings, a new facility in Skokie, Illinois in 2013, and a 2016 IPO raising $65 million. Later developments featured a 2019 Allergan (now AbbVie) collaboration with a $25 million upfront for inflammatory and neurodegenerative therapies. Recent financials show minimal revenue, such as $0.5 million in 2024 from a patent license and $500K for 2024, with ongoing strategic alternatives exploration amid liquidity challenges.

Feb-15Series C-$5M-Exicure (formerly AuraSense Therapeutics) is a Northwestern University spinout developing spherical nucleic acid (SNA) technology for immunomodulatory and gene silencing therapeutics. The platform was created by Chad Mirkin at Northwestern's International Institute for Nanotechnology and holds 51 pending and 26 issued patents. By February 2016, Exicure had completed a Series C financing that raised over $27 million in its second closing, bringing total equity funding through six investment rounds to $40.75 million. The round attracted prominent investors including Bill Gates, Pat Ryan (founder of Aon), David Walt (co-founder of Illumina), and Boon Hwee Koh (director of Agilent Technologies), along with AbbVie Ventures and other institutional backers. The company's lead candidate, AST-005, targeted TNF for mild to moderate psoriasis and had filed regulatory documentation in Germany for a Phase I trial, with management indicating approximately 230 additional potential dermatology targets for the platform.
