DateStageInvestorsRaisedValuationRev. MultipleDeal Summary
Oct-19Series BLegend Hldgs; Legend Capital; ICBC China$71M-Gambol Pet Group Co., headquartered in Liaocheng, Shandong Province, China, is a leading pet food producer specializing in research, development, production, and sales of multi-category pet food for dogs and cats, including staple foods, snacks, and health care products under brands like Myfoodie and FuLieJiaTe. Founded in 2006, the company initially operated as a subcontractor for overseas brands, leveraging insights to launch its own brands, with Myfoodie becoming a top-10 player in China's pet-related categories by 2014. It exports to markets including the US (largest private-label provider to Walmart), Europe, Asia, and North America, and operates six facilities in China and one in Thailand. On October 16, 2019, Gambol closed a CNY 500 million (approximately USD 70.5 million) Series B funding round led by Legend Capital and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, with Legend Holdings also participating. China Taihecap served as the exclusive financial advisor. This was the largest financing deal in China's pet industry for 2019, bringing total funding to RMB 900 million following a prior 2017 investment from KKR. Proceeds were allocated to production line expansion, research center construction, and smart storage facilities. Later financials show strong growth: 2020 sales included CNY 1.3B in snacks and CNY 696M in staple food; revenue reached RMB 3.68B in 2023 with net profit of RMB 312M and gross margin ~29.5%. The company went public on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (301498.SZ) on August 16, 2023, with current shareholders including KKR (31.46%) and Legend Capital (18.62%). As of late 2025, market cap stood at RMB 27.84B, with 2024 revenue surging 21.22% driven by Myfoodie and projections for RMB 8.911B revenue by 2027.
Feb-17Strategic investmentKKR--KKR announced an investment in Gambol Pet Group on February 26, 2017 through its China Growth Fund. The announcement was distributed late in the evening in the United States, corresponding to February 27 in China. Financial terms and the size of KKR’s ownership interest were not disclosed. The partners intended to expand Gambol’s production capacity in China, Thailand, Europe and the United States. Gambol supplied private label pet treats to Walmart and other international customers, while selling products to Chinese consumers through its Myfoodie brand. KKR planned to contribute experience in food production, safety systems and the international pet sector. The investment addressed opportunities created by growth in packaged pet food consumption in China and demand in established overseas markets. Gambol’s existing manufacturing footprint included six facilities in China and one in Thailand. This initial KKR investment is distinct from the company’s subsequent financing involving Legend Capital in 2019.

Description
The NPFG China brand-rights business comprises the intellectual property used to operate K9 Natural and Feline Natural pet-food brands in mainland China. The acquired perimeter includes relevant trademarks, trade names, logos, packaging designs, visual identity materials, domains and other brand elements supporting local commercial activity. These brands address the premium dog- and cat-food market with products associated with New Zealand ingredients and manufacturing. The transaction perimeter is geographically limited and does not include ownership of the worldwide Natural Pet Food Group business. Supply-chain cooperation with the New Zealand brand owner supports continuing product sourcing and formulation. The rights provide a platform for local marketing, distribution and development of the brands within China.
Simply Protein for Pets is an American pet-treat company established in December 2020 and based in Atlanta, Georgia. It develops and markets protein-focused products for dogs through branded retail distribution. Its portfolio includes Waggin’ Train, a meat-based jerky treat brand offering products made with ingredients such as chicken, duck and salmon. The business combines product development and brand management with relationships supporting manufacturing and sales to retail partners. It became the operating company for Gambol’s acquired Waggin’ Train business and was historically jointly owned by Gambol’s American subsidiary and an outside minority shareholder. Its own website describes an emphasis on simple ingredients and a portfolio of treats serving dog owners through retailers and direct product information channels.
Waggin’ Train is a branded pet-treat business focused on protein-rich snacks for dogs. Its range includes jerky treats made with chicken, duck and salmon, with products sold through retail channels and a consumer website. The business uses a branded distribution model supported by external or affiliated manufacturing rather than being defined by a single factory. It previously formed part of Nestlé Purina’s pet-food portfolio and subsequently became a Simply Protein for Pets brand within the Gambol group. The transferred business included brand intellectual property and the commercial assets supporting its customer relationships. Its product range addresses dog owners seeking meat-based treats in convenient packaged formats for everyday feeding and rewards.
Cal Premium Treats operated a pet-food manufacturing facility in Perris, California. The business’s production assets included land, factory buildings and equipment for manufacturing pet treats. Following the operator’s bankruptcy, these assets were purchased by Gambol for a United States production platform. Contemporary coverage described a factory of approximately 50,000 square feet with food processing, drying, extrusion and packaging capabilities. The intended customers included pet-food brand owners and retailers seeking products made with locally sourced ingredients. Gambol established its American subsidiary around this production operation and planned to manufacture and sell pet snacks from the site. The acquired perimeter was the industrial operating assets rather than all interests and liabilities of the bankrupt corporate seller.
