Merrill Lynch Funding Rounds

DateStageInvestorsRaisedValuationRev. MultipleDeal Summary
Dec-07Strategic investmentTemasek; Kuwait Investment Authority; Korea Investment Corp-$4.9BTemasek anchored Merrill Lynch's December 2007 capital raising with an investment of about US$4.9 billion for approximately 9% of the broker-dealer. Temasek Review 2008 described Merrill as having established wealth-management and global-markets franchises and presented the transaction as a long-term opportunity during dislocation in global financial markets. The investment was direct capital provided to the company, not an ordinary secondary-market position. Merrill later received a further US$3.4 billion from Temasek in July 2008, but US$2.5 billion of that represented a contractual reset payment from Merrill and only US$900 million was new capital; that follow-on is not combined into this initial amount. Merrill was subsequently acquired by Bank of America and Temasek received Bank of America shares. This record captures the initial strategic investment announced in December 2007. Merrill Lynch serves business and consumer customers through activities spanning its core operating markets.
