SKF Overview

About SKF

SKF’s history goes back to the first major patents in ball bearings, when in 1907 it was the first to patent the self-aligning ball bearing. SKF, along with the Schaeffler Group, are the top two global ball bearing suppliers, followed by Timken, NSK, NTN, and JTEKT. Combined, these six companies supply about 60% of the world’s ball bearings. However, most of them have sector niches, as ball bearings for industrial purposes are engineered for specific applications. SKF is based out of Sweden and has a global manufacturing footprint of 106 sites and about 17,000 global distributor locations. The firm operates under two segments: industrials, with a fairly fragmented customer base; and automotive, which is the opposite, with a concentrated customer base including the likes of Tesla.

Blohm+Voss Industries
Description
Blohm + Voss Industries GmbH is a Hamburg manufacturer and service provider of equipment for critical marine applications. Its product range covers propeller shaft seals and bearings, ship stabilisers and oily-water separators, sold to shipyards, navies and vessel operators alongside a worldwide aftermarket service network. The business was carved out of the Blohm + Voss group, whose shipbuilding operations date back to the 1877 Hamburg yard, and was acquired by STAR Capital Partnership from ThyssenKrupp in January 2012 as part of the non-military parts of the group. At the time of sale it employed around 400 people with annual sales of roughly EUR 100 million. STAR sold it to Swedish bearings and seals group SKF on 9 January 2013 for about EUR 80 million plus assumed net debt, and it subsequently traded as SKF Marine.
