May-25SecondaryQatar Investment Authority$490M$4.9BChina Asset Management (ChinaAMC), established in 1998 and China's second-largest mutual fund manager, received regulatory approval on 22 May 2025 for the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), through its subsidiary Qatar Holdings, to acquire a 10% stake from Tianjin Haipeng Technology Consulting, owned by Primavera Capital. This positions QIA as the third-largest shareholder behind Citic Securities (62%) and Mackenzie Investments (28%). Previous filings indicated the 10% stake would not be priced at less than $490 million. ChinaAMC manages approximately 1.9 trillion yuan ($264.6 billion) in net assets as of 31 March 2025 across 471 fund products, including mutual funds and exchange-traded funds for retail and institutional investors. The deal marks the first major Middle Eastern investment in China's asset management sector amid strengthening China-Gulf economic ties.
Jan-23SecondaryMackenzie Investments$1.1B-China Asset Management Co., Ltd. (ChinaAMC) is a leading Chinese asset manager headquartered in Beijing, established in April 1998 as one of China's first country-wide fund management companies. As of June 2023, the firm managed approximately CA$337 billion in assets under management and ranked as the #2 player in long-term mutual fund AUM in China with over 250 investment professionals covering public equity and fixed-income markets. Mackenzie Investments, a major Canadian asset manager, acquired an additional 13.9% equity stake in ChinaAMC from Pacific Century Cynosure Group (PCC) for C$1.15 billion in early 2022 (announced January 2022). This purchase implied a pro forma company valuation of C$2.30 billion for Mackenzie's total 27.8% stake. The transaction represented a 16% compound annual growth rate on IGM Financial's original 13.9% investment in ChinaAMC from 2017 at C$638 million. The investment reinforced Mackenzie's strategic position in China's asset management market. ChinaAMC demonstrated strong operational performance, with Q3 2021 earnings growth of 56% year-over-year and was projected to represent approximately 12% of IGM's pro forma earnings. The firm is recognized as the #1 asset management brand in China and ranks among the global top 50 asset manager brands, with particular strength in ESG investing practices within the Chinese market.
