About Monumental Sports & Entertainment
Monumental Sports & Entertainment is an American sports and venue management company headquartered in Washington, D.C. It was founded on 10 June 2010 by Ted Leonsis, the former AOL executive who had owned the NHL's Washington Capitals since 1999, after he acquired the NBA's Washington Wizards and merged Lincoln Holdings with Washington Sports & Entertainment. The company owns and operates the Capitals, the Wizards, the WNBA's Washington Mystics, the G League's Capital City Go-Go and the esports team Wizards District Gaming, as well as Capital One Arena, EagleBank Arena, the MedStar Capitals Iceplex practice facility and the regional sports network Monumental Sports Network. Minority shareholders include the Qatar Investment Authority, Jeffrey Skoll, Sheila Johnson, Mark Lerner and Arctos Partners, and CNBC valued the company at $7.84 billion in July 2025. In March 2024, after plans for a $2 billion arena complex in Alexandria, Virginia, were scrapped, Washington mayor Muriel Bowser announced a deal keeping the Capitals and Wizards in the city until 2050. In December 2025 Laurene Powell Jobs sold her stake to Arctos Partners and the Qatar Investment Authority, which increased its holding.

| Dec 2025 | Secondary | Arctos Partners (lead); Qatar Investment Authority (lead) | $7.2B | Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) is one of the nation's leading integrated sports, media, and entertainment companies. The organization owns and operates multiple major professional sports franchises including the NBA's Washington Wizards, NHL's Washington Capitals, WNBA's Washington Mystics, and the NBA G League's Capital City Go-Go. MSE also operates Capital One Arena in downtown Washington, D.C. and manages Monumental Sports Network, a local media platform. In December 2025, the company welcomed Arctos Partners as a new minority investor, while existing investor Qatar Investment Authority increased its ownership stake in the organization. The transaction valued MSE at $7.2 billion. Ted Leonsis serves as Founder, Chairman, Managing Partner, and CEO of MSE and has articulated a long-term commitment to building a comprehensive sports ecosystem in Washington, D.C. and enhancing the fan experience. MSE is currently leading an $800 million-plus transformation of Capital One Arena and the adjacent downtown sports and entertainment district as part of a public-private partnership with the city. |
| Jun 2023 | Strategic investment | Qatar Investment Authority | $4B | The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) agreed in June 2023 to buy about 5% of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the Washington, D.C. parent of the NBA's Washington Wizards, the NHL's Washington Capitals and the WNBA's Washington Mystics, in a deal valuing the group at USD 4.05 billion. It was the first investment by a sovereign wealth fund in a major US team-sports franchise, made possible after the NBA's Board of Governors allowed passive institutional investors, including sovereign funds, in November 2022. The NHL approved the transaction and the NBA board reviewed it under its passive-investor policy. QIA's stake was issued as new equity rather than bought from a single seller, so all existing Monumental holders were diluted evenly, and the money was earmarked for growth of existing properties and future acquisitions. QIA received no board seat or voting power, and managing partner Ted Leonsis kept operational control. Monumental was formed in 2010 when Leonsis combined the Capitals with the Wizards, Capital One Arena and related businesses, and it also owns the G League's Capital City Go-Go, the regional network Monumental Sports Network and esports franchise Team Liquid. Minority investors include Jeffrey Skoll, Laurene Powell Jobs, Sheila Johnson and Mark Lerner. |
| Oct 2017 | Undisclosed stage | Laurene Powell Jobs (lead) | $2.5B | Laurene Powell Jobs, founder and president of Emerson Collective, agreed in October 2017 to acquire about 20 percent of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the Washington, D.C. company that owns the NBA's Washington Wizards, the NHL's Washington Capitals, the WNBA's Washington Mystics and Capital One Arena. The stake made her the second-largest shareholder after chief executive Ted Leonsis, who remained the largest stakeholder and stayed in charge. Reports at the time valued Monumental at about USD 2.5 billion; the price was not disclosed, and The Washington Post estimated the investment at hundreds of millions of dollars. The purchase was subject to NBA and NHL approval. Powell Jobs, the widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, had also bought a majority interest in The Atlantic through Emerson Collective. Monumental was formed in 2010 when Leonsis combined the Capitals with the Wizards and their arena. Powell Jobs sold her stake in December 2025 to Arctos Partners and the Qatar Investment Authority at a USD 7.2 billion enterprise value. |
