About Chicago Bears
Chicago Bears is a professional American football team based in Chicago, Illinois, that plays in the North Division of the National Football Conference of the National Football League. The club was organised by the A. E. Staley starch company as the Decatur Staleys, became a charter member of the league in 1920 under George Halas, moved to Chicago in 1921 and adopted the Bears name in 1922. It has won eight pre-merger NFL championships, most recently in 1963, and Super Bowl XX after the 1985 season. The team has played at Soldier Field since 1971, and its headquarters and training facility are at Halas Hall in Lake Forest, Illinois. The Halas-McCaskey family has controlled the franchise for more than a century; Virginia Halas McCaskey was principal owner from 1983 until her death in February 2025, when her son George McCaskey took over. The Bears earn revenue from NFL national media and sponsorship distributions, ticketing, local sponsorship and merchandise. A sale of a minority stake held by the McKenna family in September 2025 valued the team at $8.9 billion.

| Sep 2025 | Secondary | Ryan Sports Ventures; McCaskey Family | $209M | $8.9B | The Chicago Bears sold a 2.35% minority stake in September 2025 in a transaction that valued the franchise at $8.9 billion, a record for an NFL minority stake sale at the time. The shares came from the estate of Andrew McKenna, the former McDonald's chairman and long-time Bears director who died in February 2023, and were bought by the club's two existing ownership families rather than by an outside investor. Two-thirds of the stake went to the McCaskey family, the descendants of founder George Halas who have controlled the team since 1983, and one-third to the Ryan family, led by Aon founder Patrick Ryan, who first bought into the club in 1990. After the purchase the McCaskeys hold about 77% of the Bears and the Ryans the remainder. The NFL finance committee approved the sale on 24 September 2025; no price for the stake was disclosed, and the $8.9 billion figure is the implied valuation reported at approval. The Bears, founded in 1920, are one of the NFL's two remaining charter franchises and play at Soldier Field in Chicago while pursuing a new stadium in Arlington Heights. |
| Jan 1990 | Secondary | Andrew J. McKenna; Patrick G. Ryan | - | - | The Chicago Bears sold a block of about 19.7% of the club's stock in 1990 to Chicago businessmen Andrew McKenna and Patrick Ryan for a sum that was not disclosed. The team had bought the shares from members of the Halas family, and then team president Michael McCaskey called the purchase a terrific financial burden; it was also speculated that the new investors were brought in to help the club lobby for a domed stadium. Ryan was the founder and chief executive of the insurance broker Aon, and McKenna was a Chicago paper-distribution executive who later became chairman of McDonald's. The McCaskey family, descendants of founder George Halas, kept about 80% and control of the club. Ryan now holds about 17.7%, and McKenna's estate sold its remaining 2.35% to the McCaskey and Ryan families in 2025. The Bears, founded in 1920, are one of the NFL's two remaining charter franchises and play at Soldier Field. |
