About Los Angeles Lakers
Los Angeles Lakers is an American professional basketball team based in Los Angeles that competes in the Pacific Division of the NBA's Western Conference. The franchise began in 1946 as the Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League, moved to Minneapolis as the Lakers after one season and relocated to Los Angeles before the 1960–61 season. It plays home games at Crypto.com Arena, shared with the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks and the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, and has won 17 championships, most recently in 2020. Jerry Buss bought the team in 1979, and his children held a 66% controlling stake through family trusts, with Jeanie Buss as controlling owner from 2013; in 2021 Dodgers owners Mark Walter and Todd Boehly bought Philip Anschutz's shares at a reported $5 billion team valuation. In June 2025 the Buss family agreed to sell majority control to Walter at a $10 billion valuation, which the NBA board of governors approved on October 30, 2025. In August 2026 ESPN reported that Walter had agreed to sell his controlling interest to Bob Iger and Joshua Kushner at a record $12.5 billion, subject to league approval.

Los Angeles Lakers Acquisition
Los Angeles Lakers was acquired by Josh Kushner and Bob Iger for $13B on 14 August 2026.
The acquisition price implies a 22.7x revenue and 73.5x EBITDA multiple on $551M of revenue.
A group led by Josh Kushner and Bob Iger agreed in August 2026 to buy a controlling interest in the Los Angeles Lakers from Mark Walter at a $12.5 billion valuation. The transaction was described as a record-setting U.S. pro sports franchise deal and followed Walter’s June 2025 purchase of a controlling stake at a $10 billion valuation. The deal reflects continued escalation in NBA franchise values and comes shortly after the league approved Walter’s prior acquisition. The purchase price was reported at more than 17 times the Lakers’ 2024-25 revenue, underscoring the franchise’s scale and premium market position. The Lakers are one of the NBA’s most valuable teams, with reported 2026 revenue of $565 million and EBITDA of $158 million. The franchise has operated under majority ownership changes in recent years, and the August 2026 sale positions Kushner and Iger to control a marquee global sports property with significant commercial, media, and brand leverage.

| Jun 2021 | Secondary | Mark Walter (lead); Todd Boehly | - | $5B | Los Angeles Dodgers owners Mark Walter and Todd Boehly agreed in June 2021 to buy Philip Anschutz's 27% stake in the Los Angeles Lakers, a transaction that Sportico reported valued the franchise at roughly $5 billion. The NBA Board of Governors unanimously approved the purchase on 2 July 2021 and the deal closed shortly afterwards. Anschutz, whose AEG owns the Los Angeles Kings and the arena the Lakers play in, had held the stake since 1998. Walter took the larger part of the holding, reported at about 20%, and Boehly about 7%. The buyers also inherited Anschutz's right of first refusal over other Lakers shares, which positioned Walter to buy control when the Buss family decided to sell; in June 2025 he agreed to acquire majority ownership from the Buss family at a $10 billion valuation. Walter is the chief executive of Guggenheim Partners and, with Boehly, had led the group that bought the Dodgers in 2012; the pair also controlled the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks. The Buss family remained majority owner after the 2021 sale, with Jeanie Buss as governor, and other minority owners included Patrick Soon-Shiong and Ed Roski. The Lakers have won 17 NBA championships, most recently in 2020. |
| Oct 2010 | Secondary | Patrick Soon-Shiong (lead) | $27M | $600M | Earvin "Magic" Johnson sold his minority interest of about 4.5% in the Los Angeles Lakers to Patrick Soon-Shiong, the Los Angeles surgeon and biotechnology entrepreneur, in a sale the team announced in October 2010. The price was not disclosed but was widely reported at about $27 million. Johnson, the Hall of Fame point guard who won five championships with the Lakers, had held the stake since the 1990s and said he wanted to pursue ownership of a larger piece of another team, which NBA rules would not allow while he kept an interest in the Lakers. Soon-Shiong, who made his fortune from the cancer drug Abraxane and the companies Abraxis BioScience and American Pharmaceutical Partners, had been a Lakers season-ticket holder for many years. The Buss family retained majority control, with Jerry Buss as controlling owner. Soon-Shiong still holds his stake of about 4.5% and kept it when the Buss family sold control to Mark Walter in 2025 at a $10 billion valuation, making it one of the best-performing minority investments in the league. The Lakers, based in Los Angeles since 1960, have won 17 NBA championships and play at Crypto.com Arena. |
| Jan 1998 | Secondary | Philip Anschutz (lead); Ed Roski | - | - | Philip Anschutz and Ed Roski bought a minority stake of about a quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers from Jerry Buss in 1998. Anschutz and Roski were the majority owners of the Los Angeles Arena Company, the venture formed to build a new downtown arena to replace the Great Western Forum as home of the Los Angeles Kings, and they exercised an option to buy 25% of the Lakers as the basketball team agreed to become a tenant of the new building. The price was not disclosed. Anschutz took the larger share, which stood at about 27% by the time he sold it, while Roski's holding is reported at about 3%; Sportico has estimated that Roski may have paid as little as $8 million for his piece. The Buss family kept majority control and Jerry Buss remained the controlling owner. The Lakers moved into the arena, opened as Staples Center and now named Crypto.com Arena, for the 1999-2000 season. Anschutz, whose Anschutz Entertainment Group owns the Kings and the arena, held his stake until 2021, when he sold it to Los Angeles Dodgers owners Mark Walter and Todd Boehly; Roski still owns his minority interest. The Lakers are one of the NBA's most successful franchises, with 17 championships, and have been based in Los Angeles since moving from Minneapolis in 1960. |
