Liverpool FC Acquisition

Liverpool FC was acquired by Fenway Sports Group for $476M on 6 October 2010.

The acquisition price implies a 1.5x revenue multiple on $312M of revenue.

Before the acquisition Liverpool FC had raised $200M across 1 funding round.

New England Sports Ventures (NESV), the owner of the Boston Red Sox led by John W. Henry and Tom Werner and later renamed Fenway Sports Group, agreed on 6 October 2010 to buy Liverpool Football Club from American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett after the club's board voted 3-2 to accept the offer over the owners' objections. The purchase price was GBP 300 million, a figure that went to clearing the acquisition debt the previous owners had placed on the club with lenders led by the Royal Bank of Scotland. Hicks and Gillett tried to block the sale, but the creditors went to the High Court, where Mr Justice Floyd ruled in their favour, and the sale was completed on 15 October 2010. The club was bought through NESV subsidiaries, N.E.S.V. I, LLC in Delaware and the UK holding company UKSV Holdings Company Limited. Hicks and Gillett had bought Liverpool in 2007 in a leveraged deal and their ownership had been marked by disputes and refinancing problems. Under FSG the club won the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League and the Premier League in 2019-20 and 2024-25, and FSG later sold minority stakes to Dynasty Equity in 2023 and to 1892 Holdings in 2026, the latter at a valuation of just over USD 7 billion. Liverpool was founded in 1892, plays at Anfield and earns revenue from media rights, commercial sponsorship and matchday income.

Aug 2026SecondaryK5 Global; Amit Bhatia; Jeff Bezos; Eduardo Saverin-$7.1BFenway Sports Group announced on 14 August 2026 a definitive agreement to sell a minority equity stake in Liverpool FC to 1892 Holdings, a consortium led and managed by Amit Bhatia. The consortium's investors are Bhatia and the Mittal family trusts, K5 Sports, a K5 Global fund whose lead investor is Jeff Bezos, and EE Capital, the family office of Elaine and Eduardo Saverin. CNBC reported that the buyers were acquiring roughly one-third of the club in a transaction valuing it at about US$7.1 billion, and later reports put the stake closer to 40%; the group also received an option to become the majority owner. FSG said the investment supported the club's long-term growth by bringing together experience from global business, technology and investment, and it retained majority ownership and operational control. Bhatia, the chairman of Queens Park Rangers and son-in-law of Lakshmi Mittal, became vice-chairman, and Elaine Saverin and Bryan Baum of K5 Sports joined an expanded board; Bezos did not take a board seat. FSG bought Liverpool in 2010 and had sold smaller minority stakes to RedBird Capital Partners in 2021 and Dynasty Equity in 2023. Liverpool, founded in 1892, won the Premier League in 2020 and 2025.
Sep 2023Strategic investmentDynasty Equity$200M-Fenway Sports Group announced on 28 September 2023 that Dynasty Equity had completed a strategic common-equity minority investment in Liverpool FC. Press reports put the investment at up to US$200 million, equivalent to roughly 2% to 4% of the club's equity on recent valuations of about US$5.3 billion. FSG said the new money would primarily be used to pay down bank debt incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic and capital expenses made to enhance Anfield, build the AXA Training Centre and repurchase the Melwood training ground, as well as recent acquisitions in the summer transfer window. FSG remained the club's controlling owner, and FSG president Mike Gordon said its long-term commitment to Liverpool remained as strong as ever. Dynasty Equity is a New York-based, diverse-owned global sports investment firm co-founded and led by Jonathan Nelson and K. Don Cornwell that acquires minority interests in sports franchises and related assets. Nelson said the firm was honoured to partner with FSG in a strategic partnership built on mutual respect and deep relationships. Liverpool FC is a Premier League club based at Anfield in Liverpool and one of the most successful clubs in English and European football.
