About Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid (Club Atlético de Madrid, S.A.D.) is a Spanish professional football club based in Madrid that plays in La Liga. It was founded on 26 April 1903 by three Basque students as Athletic Club Sucursal de Madrid, a branch of Bilbao's Athletic Club, merged with Club Aviación Nacional in 1939 and took the name Atlético de Madrid in 1946. The club plays at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, which holds 70,813 spectators, and co-owns Liga MX club Atlético San Luis and Canadian Premier League side Atlético Ottawa. Its honours include 11 La Liga titles, 10 Copa del Rey titles, the 1962 European Cup Winners' Cup, three UEFA Europa League titles and the 1974 Intercontinental Cup. Atlético generated €409.5 million of revenue in the 2023–24 season, 12th in Europe. The club became a sports limited company under president Jesús Gil in 1992; Wanda Group, Quantum Pacific Group and Ares Management later invested, and in March 2026 Apollo Sports Capital completed the purchase of a controlling stake valuing the club at about €2.2 billion. Enrique Cerezo remains president and Miguel Ángel Gil Marín chief executive.

Chief executive Miguel Angel Gil and president Enrique Cerezo stayed in their roles and remained shareholders, as did Ares Management funds, while Quantum Pacific Group kept substantially all of its holding and became the second-largest shareholder. The shareholders planned further capital for the club's teams and for infrastructure, including the Ciudad del Deporte, a sports and entertainment district being developed next to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano stadium, and approved an equity and strategic capital increase of up to EUR 100 million. Apollo Sports Capital, launched in September 2025 under chief executive Al Tylis, completed the transaction on 12 March 2026 after regulatory approvals. Founded in 1903, Atletico de Madrid is one of the leading clubs in Spanish and European football and has played at the Metropolitano, one of Europe's elite stadiums, since 2017. The club generated revenue of EUR 454.5 million in the 2024/25 season, ranking 13th in the Deloitte Football Money League.

Atletico Madrid funding rounds
| Date | Stage | Investors | Raised | Deal Summary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jun 2021 | Strategic investment | Ares Management (lead) | $216M | Funds managed by Ares Management became a significant indirect shareholder of Atlético de Madrid in June 2021, when the club's general meeting approved a €181.8 million capital increase. Ares took a 33.96% stake in Atlético HoldCo, the new holding company that carries the shares of long-time owners Miguel Ángel Gil and Enrique Cerezo, and HoldCo in turn became the club's majority shareholder with a 65.98% stake after the increase. Roughly 32% of the club remained with Quantum Pacific, the holding company of Israeli businessman Idan Ofer. Ares described the transaction as a structured preferred equity investment that gave liquidity to existing owners and would support future growth initiatives, including development of the area around the club's stadium. According to reports at the time, the fresh capital was intended to shore up the club's finances and reduce debt built up through the construction of the new stadium and player purchases; the club's debt had reached €999 million after the 2019/20 season, which was hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. The investment was made through Ares's sports, media and entertainment strategy, which in the same period also invested in McLaren Racing and Inter Miami CF. Atlético de Madrid is a Spanish football club founded in 1903 and based in Madrid, where it plays at the Metropolitano stadium; it won the LaLiga title in the 2020/21 season, weeks before the capital increase. In November 2025 Apollo Sports Capital agreed to become the club's majority shareholder, buying shares from Quantum Pacific, the Ares funds, Gil and Cerezo, with Ares retaining a smaller stake after completion in 2026. |
| Feb 2018 | Secondary | Quantum Pacific Group | - | Quantum Pacific Group, the investment group of Israeli businessman Idan Ofer, agreed on 14 February 2018 to acquire Dalian Wanda Group's 17% shareholding in Club Atlético de Madrid, raising its own stake from 15% to 32%. The club said Wanda's decision to divest was part of the Chinese group's global strategy, and that by mutual agreement with the majority shareholders the shares would go to one of the club's existing reference shareholders; the transfer required authorisation from Spain's Consejo Superior de Deportes. The price was not officially disclosed. Wanda had paid EUR 45 million for 20% in January 2015, a holding later diluted to 17%, and its exit was part of a wider retreat from overseas assets under pressure from Chinese regulators. Wanda kept its sponsorship role and the naming rights to the Wanda Metropolitano stadium. Miguel Ángel Gil Marín and Enrique Cerezo, the club's chief executive and president, remained the majority shareholders. Quantum Pacific had entered Atlético only three months earlier with a EUR 50 million capital increase, and it later remained the second-largest shareholder after Apollo Sports Capital acquired a majority in undefined 2025. Atlético de Madrid, founded in 1903, is one of Spain's three largest clubs and had won La Liga in 2014. |
| Nov 2017 | Strategic investment | Quantum Pacific Group | $59M | Quantum Pacific Group, the international investment group whose principal is Israeli businessman Idan Ofer, agreed on 16 November 2017 to invest EUR 50 million for a 15% stake in Club Atlético de Madrid. The investment was implemented through a capital increase, with new shares issued at EUR 78 each (EUR 8.50 par value plus EUR 69.50 share premium), so all of the money went to the club; minority shareholders kept their preferential subscription rights. Atlético's board proposed the 15% capital increase to its annual shareholders' meeting to enable the deal. The club said the new equity would significantly reinforce its own funds, support the expansion of the Atlético brand and help keep the team competitive. Miguel Ángel Gil Marín and Enrique Cerezo remained the majority shareholders, and Dalian Wanda Group, which had entered in 2015, remained a shareholder. Quantum Pacific holds interests in shipping, energy, natural resources, medical technology and automotive businesses. Three months later, in February 2018, it bought Wanda's 17% and took its holding to 32%. Atlético de Madrid, founded in 1903, was at the time moving into its new Wanda Metropolitano stadium; its revenue grew from EUR 170 million in undefined 2013 to EUR 442 million in undefined 2023. |
| Jan 2015 | Strategic investment | WANDA Group | $52M | Dalian Wanda Group, the Chinese property, cinema and entertainment conglomerate controlled by Wang Jianlin, announced on 21 January 2015 an investment of EUR 45 million to acquire a 20% equity stake in Club Atlético de Madrid. The stake was subscribed through a capital increase, so the money went to the club rather than to existing shareholders, and Wanda obtained a seat on Atlético's board. The transaction was the first investment by a Chinese company in a top-flight European football club. Alongside the equity investment the parties agreed a programme to develop Chinese grassroots football: Atlético undertook to build a training centre for young Chinese players studying in Spain, and Wanda said it would spend about EUR 20 million a year until 2017 to support some 180 young Chinese players in Spain. Wanda later also took the naming rights to the club's new stadium, which opened in 2017 as the Wanda Metropolitano. Miguel Ángel Gil Marín and Enrique Cerezo remained the club's controlling shareholders. Atlético de Madrid, founded in 1903 and based in Madrid, had won La Liga and reached the UEFA Champions League final in the 2013-14 season. Wanda held the stake, diluted to 17% by a later capital increase, until February 2018, when it sold it to Quantum Pacific Group as part of its retreat from overseas assets. |
