Smith Entertainment Group Overview

About Smith Entertainment Group

Smith Entertainment Group is a sports and entertainment holding company based in Salt Lake City, Utah, controlled by Qualtrics co-founder Ryan Smith and his wife Ashley Smith. The Smiths bought the NBA's Utah Jazz from the Miller family in 2020 for $1.66 billion, and SEG joined David Blitzer in buying Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake in January 2022. SEG also operates the downtown Salt Lake City arena formerly known as Vivint Arena, now the Delta Center. In 2024 it acquired the hockey assets of the Arizona Coyotes and launched a National Hockey League franchise in Utah, now named the Utah Mammoth. The group earns revenue from ticket sales, sponsorship, media rights, arena events and concessions across its teams and venues.

Aug 2022SecondaryArctos Partners (lead)$2.3BSmith Entertainment Group, the Salt Lake City company led by Ryan Smith that owns the NBA's Utah Jazz, announced on 19 August 2022 that it had sold a minority stake to Arctos Sports Partners. The investment spans several SEG properties, including the Jazz, Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake and Vivint Arena, and the Jazz portion required approval by the NBA's board of governors. Neither party disclosed the size of the stake or the price, but Forbes reported, citing sports bankers, that Arctos and another investor combined to buy a roughly 10% stake in the Jazz from the Miller family in a transaction that valued the team, including debt, at about $2.25 billion, 29% more than Forbes's own estimate a year earlier. The Larry H. Miller Company announced on 24 August 2022 that it was selling part of the minority interest it had kept when it sold 80% of the Jazz to Smith's group in 2020. Arctos already held part of Real Salt Lake, which it had bought into alongside David Blitzer and SEG in January 2022. Smith said the partnership would help SEG pursue its goal of bringing a third major professional sports franchise to Utah and of building the state into a sports and entertainment centre. Ryan and Ashley Smith bought the Jazz in a deal agreed in October 2020 that valued the team at $1.66 billion. Once approved, the Jazz became the fourth NBA franchise in which Arctos was known to invest, after the Golden State Warriors, the Sacramento Kings and the Philadelphia 76ers through HBSE. SEG later added an NHL franchise, now the Utah Mammoth, in 2024.

Arizona Coyotes
Description
The Arizona Coyotes are an inactive National Hockey League franchise based in the Phoenix metropolitan area of Arizona. The club was established on July 1, 1996, when the players, coaches and staff of the original Winnipeg Jets relocated to Phoenix, and it played as the Phoenix Coyotes until it was renamed the Arizona Coyotes on June 27, 2014. Home games were played at America West Arena in downtown Phoenix from 1996 to 2003, at Gila River Arena in Glendale from 2003 to 2022 and at Mullett Arena on the Arizona State University campus in Tempe from 2022 to 2024. The team never won a Stanley Cup or conference title; its only division championship came in 2011-12. Like other NHL clubs it earned money from tickets, sponsorship and media rights, with local games televised by Bally Sports Arizona until 2023 and then by Scripps Sports. Ownership was unstable: the NHL took control in 2009 after owner Jerry Moyes filed for bankruptcy and held it until 2013, and Alex Meruelo became majority owner on July 29, 2019, later becoming sole owner. After Tempe voters rejected a new arena in May 2023, the Coyotes suspended operations after the 2023-24 season and the NHL moved the players, staff and draft picks to the new Utah Hockey Club, now the Utah Mammoth; Meruelo handed the franchise rights and brand back to the NHL in June 2024.
