Arizona Coyotes Overview
About Arizona Coyotes
The Arizona Coyotes are an inactive National Hockey League franchise based in the Phoenix metropolitan area of Arizona. The club was established on July 1, 1996, when the players, coaches and staff of the original Winnipeg Jets relocated to Phoenix, and it played as the Phoenix Coyotes until it was renamed the Arizona Coyotes on June 27, 2014. Home games were played at America West Arena in downtown Phoenix from 1996 to 2003, at Gila River Arena in Glendale from 2003 to 2022 and at Mullett Arena on the Arizona State University campus in Tempe from 2022 to 2024. The team never won a Stanley Cup or conference title; its only division championship came in 2011-12. Like other NHL clubs it earned money from tickets, sponsorship and media rights, with local games televised by Bally Sports Arizona until 2023 and then by Scripps Sports. Ownership was unstable: the NHL took control in 2009 after owner Jerry Moyes filed for bankruptcy and held it until 2013, and Alex Meruelo became majority owner on July 29, 2019, later becoming sole owner. After Tempe voters rejected a new arena in May 2023, the Coyotes suspended operations after the 2023-24 season and the NHL moved the players, staff and draft picks to the new Utah Hockey Club, now the Utah Mammoth; Meruelo handed the franchise rights and brand back to the NHL in June 2024.

Arizona Coyotes Acquisition
Arizona Coyotes was acquired by Smith Entertainment Group and Ryan Smith for $1.2B on 18 April 2024.
The acquisition price implies a 10.0x revenue and 63.2x EBITDA multiple on $120M of revenue.
National Hockey League owners approved on 18 April 2024 the $1.2 billion sale of the Arizona Coyotes' hockey operations to Smith Entertainment Group, the Salt Lake City company of Ryan and Ashley Smith that owns the NBA's Utah Jazz. Under the structure brokered by the league, SEG acquired the club's players, draft picks and hockey operations staff and rolled them into what was technically a new NHL franchise in Utah, which began play in the 2024-25 season as the Utah Hockey Club and was renamed the Utah Mammoth in 2025. Of the payment, $1 billion went to Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo and $200 million was shared among the other NHL owners as the equivalent of a relocation fee. Meruelo initially kept the Coyotes name, history and intellectual property with a five-year window to build an arena in Arizona and revive the team, but he relinquished those rights to the league in June 2024 after a state land auction for an arena site was cancelled. The sale followed the rejection of a Tempe arena plan by voters in 2023 and two seasons in the 4,600-seat Mullett Arena at Arizona State University. The Utah team plays at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City. The franchise began as the Winnipeg Jets in 1972 and moved to Arizona in 1996.

| Date | Stage | Investors | Deal Summary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jun 2017 | Secondary | Andrew Barroway | Andrew Barroway bought out all the minority owners of the Arizona Coyotes in June 2017 and became the team's sole owner, the National Hockey League announced on 12 June 2017. The sellers were the IceArizona group of mainly Canadian investors, led by chief executive Anthony LeBlanc, hockey operations president Gary Drummond and George Gosbee, which had bought the club from the league in 2013 and sold 51% control to Barroway in 2014 while keeping 49%. The league said the reorganisation was intended to consolidate and strengthen the ownership, resolve disputes among the existing owners and better position the club to find a long-term arena solution in the Phoenix area. LeBlanc and Drummond left the organisation after the transfer. The deal came after Arizona State University withdrew in February 2017 from a planned joint arena project in Tempe, and the Coyotes were playing on short lease extensions at Gila River Arena in Glendale. Barroway said he remained committed to keeping the team in Arizona. He sold controlling interest to Alex Meruelo in July 2019. The franchise began as the Winnipeg Jets in 1972 and moved to Arizona in 1996. |
