Miami Marlins Overview

About Miami Marlins

Miami Marlins is an American professional baseball team based in Miami that competes in Major League Baseball's National League East Division. Blockbuster Entertainment chief executive Wayne Huizenga was awarded the expansion franchise in June 1991 for a $95 million fee, and the team began play in 1993 as the Florida Marlins at Joe Robbie Stadium, which it shared with the NFL's Miami Dolphins. In 2012 it moved into LoanDepot Park, then called Marlins Park, and changed its name to the Miami Marlins under its stadium agreement with Miami-Dade County, the park's owner. The Marlins won the World Series in 1997 and 2003, both as a wild card, but have made only four postseason appearances and have never won a division title. In October 2017 an investment group led by Bruce Sherman and Derek Jeter completed the $1.2 billion purchase of the club from Jeffrey Loria, with Sherman, who held about 46%, as control person and Jeter running baseball and business operations. Jeter stepped down as chief executive in February 2022, and in 2020 the club hired Kim Ng as the first woman general manager in the major North American leagues. In January 2026 the Marlins terminated their local television contract with FanDuel Sports Network's parent after a missed rights payment.

DateStageRaisedValuationDeal Summary
May 2026Undisclosed stage$233M$1.6BBruce Sherman, the principal owner of the Miami Marlins, sold a 15% stake in the club in early 2026 to two South Florida families whose names were not disclosed, in a transaction that valued the franchise at about $1.55 billion. The deal produced a cash infusion of about $233 million, which was used mainly to pay down part of the debt connected to the franchise; another report put the valuation closer to $1.4 billion. Sherman remains the control person, and the ownership group now includes about 15 people. The sale was reported in May 2026 and was also seen as preparing the club for a possible payroll floor in the next collective bargaining agreement, which would push low-spending teams such as the Marlins to raise their payrolls from 2027. Sherman led the group, which included Derek Jeter, that bought the Marlins from Jeffrey Loria for $1.2 billion in 2017, so the new valuation implies only a modest gain over nearly a decade. The purchase was financed partly with preferred equity and debt, and the club has raised money from minority investors since. The Marlins, founded as the Florida Marlins in 1993, play at loanDepot park in Miami and won the World Series in 1997 and 2003.
