Chicago White Sox Overview

About Chicago White Sox

Chicago White Sox is a professional baseball club that competes in the American League Central division of Major League Baseball. The club was founded in 1901 as a charter member of the American League and plays on the South Side of Chicago at the ballpark now known as Rate Field, which opened in 1991. It has won three World Series titles, in 1906, 1917 and 2005. A group led by Jerry Reinsdorf and Eddie Einhorn bought the club in 1981, and Reinsdorf has remained chairman and control person since. The White Sox earn money from media rights, sponsorship and advertising, and ticket, concession and merchandise sales. In 2025 the club agreed a framework under which Justin Ishbia may acquire control after 2029.

Jun 2025SecondaryJustin Ishbia (lead)$1.8BThe Chicago White Sox announced in June 2025 a long-term investment agreement under which Justin Ishbia, founder of the Chicago private equity firm Shore Capital Partners, becomes a large limited partner with a path to control of the club. Ishbia had already bought out several minority shareholders, with their shares valued at a combined $1.8 billion for the whole team, and he agreed to make capital infusions as a limited partner in 2025 and 2026 to pay down debt and support operations. From 2029 to 2033 Jerry Reinsdorf has the option to sell the controlling interest to Ishbia, and after the 2034 season Ishbia has the option to buy it; no transaction can take place before 2029. His brother Mat Ishbia, owner of the Phoenix Suns, and father Jeff Ishbia are expected to be significant investors if control changes hands. Reinsdorf, chairman since leading the group that bought the club in 1981, remains the sole day-to-day decision maker, and all limited partners would be able to sell to Ishbia in a future control deal. The White Sox, founded in 1901, play at Rate Field on Chicago's South Side and won the 2005 World Series.
