Philadelphia Phillies Overview

About Philadelphia Phillies

Philadelphia Phillies is a Major League Baseball club based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, competing in the National League East Division, where they have played since 1969. The National League approved the franchise on 7 December 1882 and it began play in 1883; the Phillies name has been used ever since, making it one of the longest continually used nicknames in professional sports. The team plays at Citizens Bank Park in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, which opened in 2004, and holds spring training at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Florida. It has won eight National League pennants and two World Series, in 1980, when it beat Kansas City in six games for its first title, and in 2008. Its history also includes a 23-game losing streak in 1961 and the distinction of being the first American sports franchise to pass 10,000 losses. John Middleton is the principal owner and Dave Dombrowski is president of baseball operations. The club earns revenue from ticket sales, media rights, sponsorship and merchandise.

Nov 2024Strategic investmentJohn Middleton; Mitchell Morgan; Guntram Weissenberger; Stanley Middleman$600M$3BThe Philadelphia Phillies announced on 1 November 2024 that three new investors would join the club's ownership group: the real estate executive Mitchell L. Morgan, Guntram J. Weissenberger Jr. and a third investor who asked not to be named. The Middleton and Middleman families, existing owners, also contributed additional capital. The raise brought in close to $500 million from the new investors and close to $600 million in total, and it valued the club, including its 25% stake in the regional network NBC Sports Philadelphia, at about $3 billion. John Middleton, the managing partner and chief executive, remains the control person. The raise followed the June 2023 purchase by Stanley Middleman, founder of Freedom Mortgage, of part of the Buck family's interest at a valuation of about $2.8 billion. Morgan founded Morgan Properties, one of the largest owners of apartment communities in the United States. The Phillies, founded in 1883, play at Citizens Bank Park and won the World Series in 1980 and 2008.
