May 2025SecondaryArctos Partners (lead)--NFL owners approved Arctos Partners as a limited partner of the Los Angeles Chargers on 20 May 2025, with Arctos acquiring 8% of the team. It was Arctos' second NFL investment after it bought 10% of the Buffalo Bills in December 2024, and it made Arctos the first private equity firm to hold stakes in more than one NFL franchise. The price and valuation were not disclosed. Controlling owner and chairman Dean Spanos said Arctos' track record in major professional sports spoke for itself, and Arctos co-founder Doc O'Connor said the firm was honoured to join the ownership group. The Spanos family retains majority ownership of about 61% of the club, and Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores bought a 27% stake in 2024. The same owners' meeting approved a 6% stake sale by the San Francisco 49ers at a record $8.6 billion valuation and minority sales by the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns. NFL rules let an approved fund buy between 3% and 10% of a team, invest in at most six clubs and hold each investment for at least six years. The Chargers were founded in 1960, returned to Los Angeles from San Diego in 2017 and play at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
Sep 2024SecondaryTom Gores$750M$4BDetroit Pistons owner Tom Gores agreed in September 2024 to buy 27% of the Los Angeles Chargers for $750 million, a deal that NFL owners approved on 15 October 2024 at their fall meeting in Atlanta. The transaction was struck at an enterprise value of $4 billion, a discount of more than 30% to CNBC's $5.83 billion valuation of the team, reflecting the lack of control that comes with a limited partnership stake. Gores bought the entire 24% interest held by Dea Spanos Berberian, including 9% held through a family trust, and 1% each from Dean Spanos, Alexis Spanos Ruhl and Michael Spanos for estate-planning purposes. The sale ended a three-year dispute in which Spanos Berberian had sued to force a sale of the franchise, and she agreed to resolve all claims against her siblings and the club. Dean Spanos remains controlling owner, and after the sale Dean, Alexis and Michael Spanos own 69% of the team. Gores founded private equity firm Platinum Equity in 1995. The Chargers were founded in 1960 and play at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
