New York Mets Overview

About New York Mets

New York Mets is a Major League Baseball franchise based in the New York City borough of Queens that competes in the National League East Division. The club was founded in 1962 as one of baseball's first expansion teams, created to replace the departed Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants, and its blue and orange colours evoke those two clubs. After playing at the Polo Grounds in 1962 and 1963 and at Shea Stadium from 1964 to 2008, the Mets have played at Citi Field since 2009. The team has reached the postseason eleven times, winning the World Series in 1969 and 1986, five National League pennants, most recently in 2000 and 2015, and six division titles. Hedge fund manager Steve Cohen became majority owner on October 30, 2020, buying 95% of the club from the Wilpon family for $2.4 billion, with the Wilpons keeping the remaining 5%. Forbes valued the franchise at $3.2 billion in 2025, the sixth most valuable MLB team. Under Cohen the Mets have spent heavily on players, including a three-year, $130 million contract for pitcher Max Scherzer in 2021.

DateStageInvestorsDeal Summary
Mar 2012Strategic investmentSportsNet New York; Bill MaherThe owners of the New York Mets, Fred Wilpon, Saul Katz and their families, said in March 2012 that they had raised $240 million by selling 12 minority shares in the club, each costing $20 million and representing about 4% of the team. The sale followed the collapse in September 2011 of a deal for the hedge fund manager David Einhorn to buy a large minority stake, and the money was used to shore up the club's finances after the owners' losses in the Bernard Madoff fraud and a trustee's lawsuit against them. Four of the shares were bought by SportsNet New York, the Mets' regional sports network, with funding from its cable partners Time Warner Cable and Comcast. The comedian Bill Maher later confirmed that he had bought one of the shares, and most other investors were not named. The owners kept control of the club. The Mets, founded in 1962, play at Citi Field in Queens and won the World Series in 1969 and 1986. The Wilpon and Katz families sold 95% of the club to Steve Cohen in 2020 at a valuation of about $2.4 billion.
