Tampa Bay Rays Overview

About Tampa Bay Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays are an American professional baseball team based in St. Petersburg, Florida, competing in Major League Baseball's American League East Division. MLB awarded the expansion franchise to an ownership group led by Vince Naimoli on March 9, 1995, and the team began play as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1998 at Tropicana Field, the domed stadium that has been its home in every season except 2025. Stuart Sternberg bought a controlling interest in 2005 and renamed the club the Rays before the 2008 season, when it won its first AL East title and American League pennant; it won a second pennant in 2020 and five division titles in total, but has not won a World Series. The team earns revenue from media rights, ticketing, sponsorship and merchandise, although its attendance has historically ranked among the lowest in MLB. After Hurricane Milton badly damaged Tropicana Field in October 2024, the Rays played the 2025 season at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa and returned to the dome in 2026 after nearly $60 million of repairs. A group led by Jacksonville home builder Patrick Zalupski agreed in July 2025 to buy the franchise for about $1.7 billion, and the sale closed on September 30, 2025.

Tampa Bay Rays funding rounds
DateStageInvestorsDeal Summary
May 2004SecondaryStuart Sternberg (lead)The Wall Street financier Stuart Sternberg bought a 48% plurality stake in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in May 2004 for about $65 million, mostly from the club's founding general partner Vince Naimoli and his limited partners. Naimoli kept about 15% and other limited partners held the remaining 37%. Sternberg, a former Goldman Sachs partner, took over operations and became managing general partner in October 2005, replacing Naimoli as the club's control person. The Devil Rays had joined the American League as an expansion team in 1998 after Naimoli's group was awarded the franchise in 1995, and they played at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. Under Sternberg the club was renamed the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008 and reached the World Series that year and in 2020, while running one of the lowest payrolls in the league. He remained principal owner until 2025, when he sold control to a group led by Patrick Zalupski and kept a minority stake.
