About Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers is a professional basketball team in the National Basketball Association (NBA), based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The franchise was founded in 1967 as a member of the American Basketball Association, where it won three championships, and joined the NBA in the 1976 merger. Shopping-mall developers Herb and Mel Simon bought the team in 1983, and the Simon family still controls it through Pacers Sports & Entertainment, which also owns the WNBA's Indiana Fever and operates Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The Pacers reached the NBA Finals in 2000 and 2025. The club earns revenue from tickets and premium seating, sponsorship, local and national media rights and merchandise. In 2023 Danaher co-founder Steven Rales agreed to raise his minority holding in the team to 20%.

DateStageInvestorsValuationDeal Summary
Nov 2023SecondarySteven Rales (lead)$3.5BBillionaire Steven Rales agreed in November 2023 to buy a 15% minority stake in the NBA's Indiana Pacers from the Simon family at a $3.47 billion valuation, raising his holding in the team to 20%. Rales had previously bought a 5% stake that had not been reported. Pacers owner Herb Simon, chairman of Pacers Sports & Entertainment, announced the agreement on 30 November 2023, pending league approval, and said management of the franchise would remain under Simon family control and the family was committed to keeping the team in Indiana. According to people familiar with the deal, the agreement gives Rales a possible path to control should the Simon family ever decide to sell, in the form of a right of first refusal or first offer. Rales is a co-founder of Danaher Corporation, whose businesses include the Indiana-based life sciences company Beckman Coulter, and a graduate of DePauw University; his brother Mitchell is an investor in the NFL's Washington Commanders. The deal came during a run of NBA transactions above $3 billion, including the Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks, Charlotte Hornets and Dallas Mavericks. Herb and Mel Simon bought the Pacers in 1983, and Pacers Sports & Entertainment also owns the WNBA's Indiana Fever and operates Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
