DateStageRaised FromRaisedValuationRev. MultipleDeal Summary
Jun-14Series FInsight Partners; IVP; Marker; Sutter Hill Ventures$50M$525MYext, founded in 2006 by Howard Lerman, Brian Distelburger, and Brent Metz, provides software that helps businesses manage and synchronize their location data, listings, and ad campaigns across the web, including local search services, websites, Yelp, and Facebook. The company shifted from a pay-per-call advertising model launched at TechCrunch50 in 2009 to its current focus on geomarketing software after selling its ad business to IAC’s CityGrid Media. By 2014, Yext served over 300,000 active locations for more than 300,000 customers, including 300 large enterprises and thousands of small businesses. In June 2014, Yext raised $50 million in a Series F funding round led by Insight Venture Partners, with participation from Marker, IVP, and Sutter Hill Ventures. The post-money valuation was $525 million, up from $270 million in the prior $27 million Series E round in 2012, bringing total funding raised to over $115 million. CEO Howard Lerman described this as pre-IPO financing, with plans to go public in 2015, and the funds earmarked for international expansion into Germany, Australia, the UK, and Canada, continued R&D, and potential acquisitions—Yext had made its first acquisition about a month prior. Yext reported revenue of $34 million in 2013, up 136% from 2012, with growth of 62% to more than $55 million in 2014, achieving a $55 million run rate already by mid-year. The company positioned itself for aggressive expansion as an independent entity ahead of its planned IPO. Competitively, Yext targeted brick-and-mortar businesses needing accurate online presence management, evolving from Yellow Pages aspirations to real-time data synchronization for SMBs and enterprises.
