Phoenix Suns Overview

About Phoenix Suns

Phoenix Suns is an American professional basketball team based in Phoenix, Arizona, that plays in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The franchise began play in 1968 as an expansion team with Jerry Colangelo as its first general manager, plays its home games at the arena now called Mortgage Matchup Center, and has the Valley Suns as its G League affiliate; PayPal is its main sponsor. The Suns have never won an NBA title but have reached the NBA Finals three times, in 1976, 1993 and 2021, and won eight division titles, and Charles Barkley and Steve Nash both won Most Valuable Player awards with the club. Colangelo led a group that bought the team for $44 million at the start of the 1987-88 season and in 2004 sold it to an investment group headed by Robert Sarver for $401 million. In September 2022 Sarver announced he would sell, and in December 2022 he agreed to sell the Suns and the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury to United Wholesale Mortgage chief executive Mat Ishbia and his brother Justin for a record $4 billion, a deal completed in February 2023. Josh Bartelstein is chief executive.

Phoenix Suns Acquisition

Phoenix Suns was acquired by Mat Ishbia and Justin Ishbia for $4B on 21 December 2022.

The acquisition price implies a 13.2x revenue and 46.0x EBITDA multiple on $302M of revenue.

Mortgage executive Mat Ishbia agreed on 20 December 2022 to buy a majority stake in the Phoenix Suns and the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury from Robert Sarver at a $4 billion valuation, then the highest price paid for an NBA franchise. His brother Justin Ishbia, founder of the private equity firm Shore Capital Partners, joined the purchase as a significant investor and alternate governor, with Mat Ishbia as governor. The NBA Board of Governors approved the sale on 6 February 2023 and the transaction closed shortly afterwards; Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, whose Rocket Mortgage competes with Ishbia's company, abstained. Sarver put the teams up for sale in September 2022 after an NBA investigation into workplace misconduct led to a one-year suspension and a $10 million fine. Ishbia is chairman and chief executive of United Wholesale Mortgage, the Pontiac, Michigan-based wholesale mortgage lender, and bought the teams personally rather than through the company; he played as a walk-on guard on Michigan State's 2000 national championship team. Sarver's group had bought the Suns and Mercury from Jerry Colangelo in 2004 for $401 million. The Suns, founded in 1968, reached the NBA Finals in 2021 and play in downtown Phoenix, where the Mercury, founded in 1997, are one of the WNBA's original franchises.

Jul 2021SecondaryBlue Owl Capital Inc.$1.6BDyal HomeCourt Partners, the NBA-focused fund of Blue Owl Capital's Dyal division, agreed in early July 2021 to buy a stake of less than 5% in the Phoenix Suns. The deal valued the team at $1.55 billion. All of the equity came from existing Suns limited partners rather than from controlling owner Robert Sarver, so the transaction was a secondary purchase. It was HomeCourt's first NBA investment. Dyal had formed the fund in 2020 in partnership with the league, and HomeCourt is the only institutional investor allowed to own equity in more than five NBA franchises. Sarver said the Suns were proud to be the fund's first investment. The Suns were playing in their first NBA Finals in 28 years when the deal was reported. The team's limited partners included Larry Fitzgerald, Andy Kohlberg, Sam Garvin and Jahm Najafi. HomeCourt sold at least part of the position in February 2023, when Mat Ishbia bought control at a $4 billion valuation, a 158% gain in about 18 months.
