ZTE Microelectronics focused on semiconductor technologies for telecommunications, mobile devices, Big Data, cloud computing, Internet of Things, and wearables, with over 2,000 R&D employees in offices across China and the United States. The company was developing products using 28-nanometer technology and possessed R&D capabilities for 16-nanometer and 14-nanometer technologies. In 2014, the fiscal year prior to the investment, ZTE Microelectronics reported revenue of RMB 3.06 billion and net profit of RMB 458.6 million, representing a 258% increase in net profit compared to the prior year. The China Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund, backed by major Chinese government and state-owned entities including the Ministry of Finance, China Development Bank, and China Mobile Communications Corporation, was part of China's strategic initiative to achieve semiconductor industry self-sufficiency.
