DateStageRaised FromRaisedValuationRev. MultipleDeal Summary
Oct-17Undisclosed stageBirla Sun Life Insurance; ICICI Prudential Asset Management; Multiples; Nomura; SBI Mutual Fund$461M-Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) is India's premier automated power exchange, facilitating nationwide trading of physical electricity delivery, Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), and Energy Saving Certificates, approved by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission since 2008. In October 2017, IEX launched its IPO as an offer for sale (OFS) of up to 60.65 lakh equity shares by investors including Multiples PE (45% of OFS), Tata Power (21%), Golden Oak Mauritius (11%), and Aditya Birla PE (8%), priced at Rs. 1645-1650 per share, listing on BSE and NSE. At the IPO upper price band of Rs. 1650, IEX achieved a market cap of Rs. 5004 crore and enterprise value (EV) of Rs. 4703 crore. Valuation multiples included PE of 44x on FY17 PAT of Rs. 114 crore and EV/EBITDA of 27x on FY17 figures, compared to peers like MCX (EV/EBITDA 22x, PE 42x). These were deemed reasonable given IEX's dominant market share and near-monopoly in power trading versus BSE's competition. Financials around FY17 showed net worth of Rs. 275 crore approximately, with restated assets at Rs. 552 crore. PAT grew to Rs. 114 crore in FY17 from prior years, supporting premium valuations. IEX listed at Rs. 1626.45 shortly after IPO open on October 9, 2017.
Mar-16Series AMotilal Oswal Private Equity$15M-Indian Energy Exchange (IEX), established in 2008, operates as India's first power exchange, providing a transparent, neutral, and automated trading platform for electricity (physical delivery) and renewable energy certificates. In March 2016, Motilal Oswal Private Equity (MOPE) acquired a 4.1% stake in IEX from Jindal Power for Rs 98 crore. According to MOPE chairman Raamdeo Agrawal, the investment was made on the thesis that India would transition from power deficiency to power surplus, positioning power exchanges—as the most transparent mechanism for price discovery—to expand their share of total power traded from then-current levels of approximately 3% of total power requirement.
Oct-15Secondary - privateTVS Capital Funds$13M-Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) operates as India's largest electricity exchange by volume, holding 95% market share and over 3,000 registered participants. In October 2015, a consortium led by DCB Power Ventures of Dalmia Bharat Group, including TVS Capital Funds, acquired a 20% stake from sellers for Rs 430 crore, implying a company valuation of Rs 2,150 crore at 20 times earnings. TVS Capital Funds separately purchased a 4% stake from Bessemer Venture Partners for around Rs 81-90 crore as part of increasing its exposure. IEX traded 28 billion units in the Day-Ahead Market during fiscal 2015 and was positioned for strong growth amid India's expanding power sector. The transaction valued the company at Rs 350 crore in Bessemer's prior 2010 investment, highlighting significant appreciation. TVS Capital's involvement included board addition of Puneet Dalmia, with plans for potential IPO amid favorable regulations and sector tailwinds.
