May-13Series BNRG Energy$15M-Eos Energy Enterprises raised $15 million in its Series B financing round in May 2013, with participation from a syndicate of 21 strategic and financial investors including NRG Energy as a notable participant. NRG Energy, which has the nation’s largest independent power generation portfolio including fossil fuel, nuclear, solar, and wind facilities, invested for the first time in an energy storage company, citing strategic interest in enhancing generation assets and exploring novel storage opportunities. The company was developing the Aurora zinc-air battery system, touted for low cost at around $160 per kWh, a 30-year lifespan, and use of benign materials. At the time, Eos Energy was testing its first batteries with New York utility ConEdison using a state grant for grid installation and had other utility partners in development. The funding supported progression toward production and delivery of Aurora systems in 2014 to utility partners extending beyond the US. Eos had already begun its Series C round to fund manufacturing based on a capital-efficient plan and partnerships, positioning for a short path to profitability.
