Oct-14Series EAccess Technology Ventures; GIC; Goldman Sachs; JP Morgan Banco; Notable Capital; Omega Venture Partners; Sapphire Ventures; Sozo Ventures$150M$6BBlock, Inc., formerly known as Square, Inc., is a financial services and digital payments company founded in 2009 that provides payment processing solutions for small businesses through its flagship Square product, a compact card reader that attaches to smartphones and tablets for accepting card payments. The company expanded into additional merchant services, point-of-sale hardware, invoicing, and later consumer-facing products like Cash App. In October 2014, Square closed a Series E funding round raising $150 million led by GIC Special Investments Pte. Ltd., with participation from Rizvi Traverse Management LLC, Goldman Sachs, and others including Omega Venture Partners and possibly matching the queried investors. The round was completed around October 5, 2014, following initial filings in September for at least $100 million, with additional commitments bringing the total to $150 million at a post-money valuation of $6 billion USD. This marked a slight increase from a prior $5 billion valuation tied to a secondary share sale earlier in the year. The $6 billion valuation reflected Square's rapid growth in mobile payments amid competition from PayPal, Apple Pay, and Amazon's Local Register, positioning Square as a leader in small merchant card processing with low-margin fee aggregation but ambitions for broader services. The company had secured a $225 million credit line in April 2014 and focused on core merchant tools after setbacks like a consumer wallet app. Square processed approximately $20 billion in payments in 2013, with expectations of $30 billion in 2014, though gross payment volume is not revenue. Total funding raised by Square reached $590 million by this round. Post-round, Square went public in November 2015 at a $2.9 billion market cap, significantly lower than the $6 billion private valuation due to differing share rights. The company continued expanding Square Capital lending, processing $23.8 billion in payment volume in 2014 and growing to $24.12 billion in revenue by 2024 alongside Cash App.
