Amprius Funding Rounds

DateStageRaised FromRaisedValuationRev. MultipleDeal Summary
Jan-14Series CChinergy Capital; Innovation Endeavors; IPV Capital; Kleiner Perkins; SAIF Partners; Trident Capital; VantagePoint Capital Partners$30M-Amprius, a Sunnyvale, California-based company founded in 2008 by Stanford professor Yi Cui, develops high-energy density lithium-ion batteries using silicon nanowire anode technology. The firm raised $30 million in Series C funding in early 2014, led by SAIF Partners, with participation from prior investors including Trident Capital, VantagePoint Capital Partners, IPV Capital, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Chinergy Capital, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, and Stanford University. The funding was earmarked to accelerate commercialization of Amprius' high-energy and high-capacity batteries, particularly for consumer electronics like smartphones and tablets, while advancing development of silicon-based anodes, advanced cathodes, and innovative manufacturing processes. By mid-2013, Amprius had introduced its first-generation batteries with energy densities of 580 Wh/L (1,850 mAh) and 600 Wh/L (4,060 mAh), supplying samples to OEMs, with higher-density silicon nanowire versions planned for subsequent generations exceeding 650-700 Wh/L. CEO Dr. Kang Sun noted strong global customer interest, and SAIF Partners' Andrew Yan highlighted alignment with demand for long-life batteries and future electric transportation applications. Later developments include additional funding bringing total venture capital to over $50 million by 2022 and a planned SPAC merger valuing the company at $1.3 billion, but these postdate the 2014 Series C.
