Founded in 2010, the company had been bootstrapped for its first decade, achieving profitability before its first institutional funding. On May 4, 2021, Kajabi announced a $550 million growth equity financing round led by Tiger Global Management, with participation from TPG, Tidemark (Owl Rock Capital, now Blue Owl Capital), Meritech Capital, and existing investor Spectrum Equity, valuing the company at over $2 billion. The platform's community had rapidly expanded, with users collectively generating more than $1.5 billion in gross merchandise volume (GMV) annually as of the round, up over 150% year-over-year, and over $4 billion in total creator revenue facilitated to date. Kajabi reported serving nearly 50,000 members and nearly 50 million customers, with net revenue retention exceeding 100% and strong unit economics. The company remained profitable and was in hyper-growth mode, having quadrupled headcount since early 2019 and more than doubled in 2020 alone. Proceeds from the round were intended to scale the team, develop best-in-class products, expand internationally, and pursue strategic mergers and acquisitions to broaden the product portfolio and geographic reach. The investment reflected the booming creator economy during the 2021 venture surge, positioning Kajabi as infrastructure akin to Shopify for creator commerce. Scott Wagner, former GoDaddy CEO and Tidemark advisor, joined the board as part of the financing.
