DateStageInvestorsRaisedDeal Summary
Jan 2022Undisclosed stageSwen Capital Partners (lead)$34MCVE, a French independent renewable energy producer founded in 2009, raised €30M from SWEN Capital Partners around May 2022 to accelerate the growth of its biogas subsidiary, CVE Biogaz, which was spun off as part of the deal. The funds are primarily for developing CVE Biogaz's biogas business based on a local methanation model, with ambitions to become France's leading independent renewable gas player and capture 10% of the French biogas market by 2030. CVE retained majority equity and voting rights in CVE Biogaz, now co-owned with SWEN through its Impact Fund for Transition. SWEN Capital Partners, a European asset manager specializing in non-listed responsible investments with experience in methanation, led the investment, aligning with its strategy for renewable gas projects. The transaction involved financial and tax due diligence by Eight Advisory. CVE operates multi-country and multi-energy, active in France, Chile, USA, and expanding in Africa, employing nearly 240 people at the time.
Sep 2020Undisclosed stageICG Infra$117MCVE is a France-based independent producer of renewable energy operating across multiple countries with a focus on decentralized power generation from sources like solar, biogas, and hydropower, selling directly to businesses and communities via short supply chains. In September 2020, Intermediate Capital Group (ICG) through its infrastructure arm ICG Infra invested €100 million in equity and quasi-equity into CVE to reinforce its capital base, finance its 2020-2025 business plan, accelerate investments, support long-term growth, and diversify its energy mix including accelerating methanation (targeting nearly 25% of revenue by 2025 from 2%) and hydropower. At the time, CVE aimed to increase its production capacity eightfold to 2.3 GW in operation and under construction by 2025, with over 50% deployed outside France in markets like the US, Chile, and certain African countries. This 2020 investment marked ICG Infra's entry into CVE, providing resources to capture growth in competitive renewable energy markets. Founding partners Pierre de Froidefond, Hervé Lucas, and Christophe Caille highlighted the deal's role in accelerating development, while Arnaud Réal del Sarte, Deputy CFO, emphasized the solidity of CVE's multi-energy, multi-country model. Guillaume d’Engremont, Head of European Infrastructure at ICG, noted it as a sustainable infrastructure investment partnering with a leading industrial player already key in its markets. A follow-on €100 million investment from ICG Infra occurred in March 2023, described as additional to the 2020 commitment, to further fund growth amid a buoyant clean energy market. By end-2022, CVE had 640 MW in assets, planning to quadruple to 2.7 GW by 2027 with acceleration in France, Chile, and the US, plus biogas success; it reported €76 million in 'sales' for 2022 (over 50% YoY growth) and employed 350 people.
