Jan 2018Series AACON Investment (lead)$8MCitla Energy is a Mexican independent oil and gas exploration and production company founded in 2015. The company participates in Mexico's opening oil and gas sector, acquiring onshore and offshore assets independently and with partners. On January 29, 2018, ACON Investments made a US$7.5 million follow-on investment in Citla Energy. This round is part of total funding of $290.2 million, with investors including ACON Investments, IFC, and IFC Asset Management. Citla has strong institutional backers, including capital from large Mexican pension funds and the China Mexico Fund. Post-investment, Citla Energy won three blocks in Mexico's Round 2.1 shallow water auction: Block 7 (25% Citla), Block 9 (35% Citla), and Block 14 (40% Citla), partnering with ENI and Cairn. The company planned a drilling program in the Salinas del Istmo basin with these partners, investing $165 million in three exploratory wells between late 2019 and early 2020.
Apr 2016Undisclosed stageIFC Asset Management Company (lead); International Finance Corporation$200MCitla Energy, SAPI de CV, is a Mexican independent oil exploration and production (E&P) company founded by ACON Investments in 2015 to build a portfolio of E&P assets in Mexico, both independently and through partnerships, capitalizing on the Mexican Energy Reform that opened the sector to private participation. On April 20, 2016, IFC committed $60 million in equity and the China-Mexico Fund (CMF), a $1.2 billion private equity fund managed by IFC Asset Management Company, committed $140 million, totaling $200 million. This marked the first investment by IFC and CMF in Citla as part of a broader equity financing package led by ACON, which included capital from Mexican pension funds via a locally managed CKD. One IFC disclosure notes ACON and co-investors aggregating equity financing of up to $1.0 billion for Citla to pursue opportunities from the reforms. Led by CEO Alberto Galvis, formerly of BP, Citla aimed to expand through tenders, acquisitions, farm-ins, and partnerships. The investment was positioned to strengthen Citla as an institutional platform with resources for selected opportunities, complementing ACON's efforts with IFC and AMC's expertise to operate under high international standards.
