Talos Energy Overview

About Talos Energy

Talos Energy is an American independent oil and gas exploration and production company headquartered in Houston, Texas, focused on the offshore US Gulf of Mexico and shallow waters off Mexico. Timothy Duncan founded it in 2012 with a $600 million equity commitment from Apollo Global Management and Riverstone Holdings, and it became the NYSE-listed Talos Energy Inc. (ticker TALO) through its May 2018 combination with Stone Energy. Its US operations centre on deepwater fields in the Green Canyon and Mississippi Canyon areas plus the Gulf of Mexico shelf, and in Mexico it holds Block 7, which contains the Zama discovery it made in 2017 with Premier Oil and Sierra Oil & Gas. Talos earns revenue by selling oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids to purchasers, and also runs a carbon capture and sequestration segment. It grew through acquisitions including EnVen Energy for $1.1 billion in 2023 and QuarterNorth Energy, completed in March 2024. In 2025 it produced 94.6 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day and reported total revenue of $1.78 billion, with about 700 employees. Paul Goodfellow became president and chief executive on March 1, 2025.

Talos Energy Funding Rounds

DateStageInvestorsRaisedValuationRev. MultipleDeal Summary
Apr-12Undisclosed stageApollo Global Management; Riverstone$600M-Talos Energy announced on 4 April 2012 that it had partnered with investment funds affiliated with Apollo Global Management and Riverstone Holdings to form a new oil and gas company with up to $600 million of equity commitments. The capital was committed to back a Houston-based management team led by chief executive and president Tim Duncan, with Steve Heitzman, John Parker and John Harrison, in acquiring and developing assets along the Gulf Coast and in the Gulf of Mexico. The team had previously built two private equity-backed producers together: Gryphon Exploration, formed in 2000 and sold to Woodside Energy in 2005, and Riverstone portfolio company Phoenix Exploration, formed in 2006 and sold to an Apache-led group in 2011. Talos said it would focus on acquisitions primarily in shallow water, where the team had extended and enhanced mature fields through operational, exploitation and exploration work. Apollo senior partner Greg Beard said the investment fitted Apollo's approach of partnering with management teams to buy physical assets at attractive valuations and improve them operationally. Riverstone co-founders Pierre Lapeyre and David Leuschen described the commitment as a re-partnering with a proven, basin-focused team and said they hoped to repeat the Phoenix outcome. Duncan said the sponsors' natural resources experience and the Gulf's continuing opportunities would support building Talos into a significant exploration and production company. Talos went on to acquire Energy Resource Technology from Helix Energy Solutions in 2013 and later combined with Stone Energy in 2018 to become a listed company, with Apollo and Riverstone funds remaining large shareholders.
