DateStageRaised FromRaisedValuationRev. MultipleDeal Summary
Mar-22Strategic investmentCargill$290M$1BMultiexport Foods S.A., a Chilean company based in Puerto Montt founded in 1987, is engaged in farming, processing, and sales of farm-raised salmon and trout, with brands including Multi X, Arka, and Latitude 45. Its subsidiary Salmones Multiexport S.A. (Multi X) is a major salmon producer, reporting 85,200 tonnes of Atlantic salmon (head on gutted) in 2020, positioning it as Chile's second-largest producer after Aquachile. On March 17-18, 2022, Cargill agreed to acquire a 24.5% stake in Multi X from Multiexport Foods for USD 300 million, implying a total company valuation of USD 1.13 billion. Mitsui & Co., a shareholder since 2015, concurrently increased its stake by 1.13% (or 1.1% per some reports) to also reach 24.5%. Multiexport Foods retained control with 51% ownership post-transaction. The deal, approved by shareholders and completed by May 31, 2022, was advised by firms including Oaklins International for Multiexport Foods and Rabobank for Cargill. It represented an implicit premium over the prior market value and a multiple above average comparable salmon industry transactions. The investment aligns with Cargill's seafood strategy, leveraging its expertise in aquafeed, animal nutrition, value-added processing, risk management, and fish health to enhance Multi X's global reach for high-quality, sustainable private label and branded salmon products. Multiexport Foods' president described the partnership with Cargill and Mitsui as a strategic step for development, combining unique capabilities to create value across the supply chain.
