DateStageRaised FromRaisedValuationRev. MultipleDeal Summary
Apr-14Undisclosed stageEG Capital Advisors; Goldman Sachs; Man Capital; Nelstone Ventures$130M--
Mar-14Undisclosed stageAfrican Infrastructure Investment Managers; Goldman Sachs; IFC Asset Management Company$420M-IHS Towers, Africa’s largest independent telecommunications infrastructure company by number of towers managed, secured US$490 million in equity and debt on March 3, 2014, to fund continued expansion. The round included strong participation from Goldman Sachs, IFC Global Infrastructure Fund, and African Infrastructure Investment Managers as lead, alongside existing investors, priced at a premium to the July 2013 funding. This brought total capital raised by IHS to over $1.5 billion in the prior 12 months. At the time, IHS owned and managed over 10,500 towers, having built over 3,500 for clients across Nigeria, Cameroon, and Côte d’Ivoire, with recent agreements to acquire over 1,200 sites from MTN in Zambia and Rwanda in Q4 2013. IHS provides services across the full tower value chain, including managed services, deployment, and site ownership, operating in Nigeria, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Zambia, and Rwanda. The 2014 funding supported growth in these markets, part of a trajectory that saw subsequent raises, such as $2.6 billion in late 2014 comprising $2 billion equity and $600 million debt for acquisitions and new builds. Later transactions included acquiring 9,151 towers from MTN Nigeria in September 2014 valued around US$1.8 billion (close to $200,000 per tower, with MTN retaining equity), over 1,100 from Airtel in Zambia and Rwanda, and Wendel's additional $304 million commitment bringing its total to $779 million. IHS continued aggressive expansion, surpassing 20,000 towers ahead of schedule by late 2014 and reaching over 30,000 by its 2021 NYSE IPO at nearly $7 billion valuation, with Nigeria as its primary market.
