Grindr VC Funding History

Before going public, Grindr raised $93M in total equity funding, across 1 round.

Grindr Funding Rounds

DateStageRaised FromRaisedValuationRev. MultipleDeal Summary
Jan-16Undisclosed stage-$93M-Grindr, the leading social networking and dating app for gay, bi, trans, and queer people launched in 2009, sold a 60% majority stake to Chinese gaming company Beijing Kunlun Tech (also referred to as Beijing Kunlun World Wide Technology Co. or Kunlun Wanwei) for $93 million in January 2016. This transaction valued the company at a post-money valuation of $155 million, marking its first outside investment after years of self-funding. The deal was aimed at accelerating growth, expanding services beyond matchmaking, and enhancing the platform for its approximately 2 million daily active users who spent an average of 54 minutes per session in the app. Leaked documents indicated Grindr expected to generate about $38 million in advertising and subscription revenue in 2015, reflecting strong monetization from its user base. Prior-year revenue was reported at $32 million in 2014, up from $25 million in 2013, demonstrating consistent growth in a competitive landscape that included apps like Scruff and Tinder. The investment was described by founder and CEO Joel Simkhai as a vote of confidence to connect users more deeply with the world, while maintaining business as usual. Kunlun, which had gone public on the Chinese stock market the previous year and relied on mobile games for revenue, saw the acquisition as an entry into the global LGBTQ+ social networking space. Grindr's COO noted the need for a partner to scale faster, with users already present in every country worldwide. This round positioned Grindr for further expansion amid rising competition, including from Chinese rival Blued, which later claimed a higher valuation.
