Established in 2000 by China Petrochemical Corporation, a state-owned enterprise and majority shareholder, the company also owns oil and gas assets in Shandong and Sichuan provinces. It has a smaller global upstream presence than its peers, PetroChina and CNOOC. In 2024, Sinopec’s production of oil and gas equivalent was 515.35 million barrels. The firm also processed 252.30 million metric tons of crude oil.

Abu Dhabi National Energy Co PJSC which is majority-owned by the Abu Dhabi government is a fully integrated energy provider with operations in nine markets around the world. Its Martinez, California, facility has the ability to produce 730 million gallons a year of renewable diesel.
