Jun-22Secondary - privateGenCap Management$1M——
Nov-21Series AMorgan Creek Digital$424M$7BGemini Space Station, LLC (also referred to as Gemini), founded in 2015 by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, operates as a leading cryptocurrency platform offering services to buy, sell, store, earn, spend, and learn about crypto, including NFT creation and collection via its wholly owned Nifty Gateway platform. The company secured its first outside funding round on November 18, 2021, raising $400 million in growth equity led by Morgan Creek Digital, with participation from 10T, ParaFi, Newflow Partners, Marcy Venture Partners, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, and others, at a valuation of $7.1 billion. This round valued the enterprise at $7.1 billion, with proceeds intended to fuel global expansion, enhance technical offerings like multi-party computation cryptography and distributed key management via acquisitions such as ShardX, and support ambitions to build a metaverse competing with platforms like Meta. At the time of the round, Gemini employed around 600 people across offices in New York, London, and Singapore, with plans to grow to 1,000 by year-end, and held regulatory approvals including an EMI license from the UK's Financial Conduct Authority and filings in Singapore. Nifty Gateway had achieved over $420 million in sales through 375 artist collaborations since launch. Gemini ranked as the 11th cryptocurrency exchange by CoinGecko trust score, with $482 million in 24-hour trading volume, far behind leaders like Binance and Coinbase. The Winklevoss brothers retained approximately 75% ownership post-round, boosting their net wealth significantly. The funding positioned Gemini amid a booming crypto market, with $15 billion in global blockchain funding in the first nine months of 2021 alone, up 384% from all of 2020. Morgan Creek Digital's General Partner Sachin Jaitly joined the board, citing confidence in Gemini's vision for crypto in redesigning finance, art, and the internet. Later developments included obtaining a MiCA license from Malta in August 2025 and listing on Nasdaq Global Select Market on September 12, 2025, via an IPO raising $425 million at a $3.3 billion initial market cap, closing at $3.5 billion.
