Carvana Funding History

Before going public, Carvana raised $160M in total equity funding, across 2 rounds.

Carvana Funding Rounds

DateStageRaised FromRaisedValuationRev. MultipleDeal Summary
Aug-16Series C-$160M-Carvana is an online used car marketplace offering a fully digital sales process, including 150-point inspections, financing, warranties, and unique car vending machines for in-person pickups. In August 2016, the Phoenix-based company raised $160 million in a new funding round from unnamed investors, bringing its total funding to $460 million, following prior equity of $140 million and $400 million in debt. The funds were earmarked for aggressive expansion, aiming to have inventory in over 20 markets by year-end, building physical storage and vending locations, and scaling inventory through used car purchases. The company had debuted vending machines in Atlanta (prototype in 2013) and Nashville, where pickups accounted for about half of purchases in those cities, and subsidized travel for out-of-area customers. Carvana reported $150 million in revenue for 2015 and projected at least $350 million in revenue for 2016, highlighting strong growth expectations amid its push to disrupt traditional used car dealerships with an e-commerce model. While not yet profitable company-wide, several individual markets were profitable, underscoring the viability of its business model. Investors believed in rapid scaling to capture market share in the lucrative used car sector, with CEO Ernie Garcia emphasizing the need to 'strike while the iron is hot' rather than slower growth. The funding supported nationwide expansion of its white-glove service, which saved customers an average of $1,681 per purchase and included a 100-day/4,189-mile warranty. This positioned Carvana against traditional dealers by simplifying shopping, purchasing, and trade-ins online.
