Apr 2016Series CAlibaba Group (lead); CICC; CITIC Securities$568M$4.2BUCAR, a China-based B2C chauffeured car-hailing service spun out from China Auto Rental (CAR) in January 2015, completed a RMB3.68 billion ($568 million) funding round on February 29, 2016, led by Alibaba Group affiliates with participation from CICC, CITIC Securities, and others. Alibaba invested RMB2.8 billion ($432 million) for a 9.8% stake, though it transferred shares to Yunfeng Capital and Yunling Venture Capital due to conflicts with portfolio company Didi Kuaidi; a strategic collaboration on transport e-commerce and smart cars was signed. The round established a post-money valuation of RMB28.7 billion. Prior to this, UCAR received $125 million from CAR in mid-2015 and $550 million from Legend Capital and Warburg Pincus in September 2015. The funding announcement coincided with UCAR's application to list on China's NEEQ (New Third Board) market. Chairman Charles Zhengyao Lu highlighted plans to expand into car sales while maintaining chauffeured services. The investment boosted UCAR's cash flows to 8-9 billion yuan, positioning it in China's competitive ride-hailing market against players like Didi Kuaidi. UCAR later exited unicorn status via IPO in 2016.
