Oct 2024Series CGuangzhou Automobile Group (lead); DiDi$298M-Shanghai Didi Woya Technology, the autonomous driving subsidiary of Didi Chuxing founded in 2019, develops hardware and software for self-driving vehicles, including Level 4 robotaxis in partnership with BAIC Group and mass-production plans with GAC Aion for driverless electric cars. The company completed a Series C funding round raising $298 million led by Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC), with GAC injecting funds directly and via GAC Capital, aligning with their strategic partnership announced earlier in 2024 to co-develop L4 autonomous new energy vehicles through Andi Technology for commercial launch by 2025. Didi Woya has raised over $1.1 billion total from investors including IDG Capital, SoftBank Vision Fund, and multiple GAC investments since 2021. The company operates mixed-order dispatching in Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai demonstration areas for over 1,500 days via its Huiju Port center. GAC's repeated investments underscore deep industrial collaboration, including forming Guangzhou Andi Technology in 2024 for L4 vehicle manufacturing. Didi Woya leverages Didi Chuxing's vast ride-hailing data (60 million daily orders) for AI training and commercialization.
Oct 2023Undisclosed stageGuangzhou Automobile Group (lead)$149M-In October 2023, GAC Group (through subsidiaries GAC Capital Co., Ltd. and Guangzhou Development District Investment Group Co., Ltd.) established a special fund investing up to $149 million in DiDi Autonomous Driving. This investment was intended to fuel research and development for autonomous vehicle technology and robotaxi services. At the time, DiDi Autonomous Driving was operating robotaxi services in select areas of Guangzhou and Shanghai with a reported 1,200 consecutive days of safe operation using a mixed dispatching model combining autonomous and human-driven vehicles. Two years later, in October 2025, DiDi Autonomous Driving announced a Series D round raising RMB 2 billion ($281 million), which included GAC Group among multiple investors.
Jan 2021Series AGuangzhou Automobile Group (lead); IDG Capital (lead); CPE; Paulson & Co.; China Investment Corporation; CCB International; Russian Direct Investment Fund; Guotai Junan Intl Hldgs; GAC Capital$300M$6BDidi Woya, the autonomous driving subsidiary of China's ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing, completed a $300 million funding round in January 2021 led by Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) and IDG Capital. The round included contributions from GAC Group ($100 million), GAC Capital ($100 million), and other investors including the Russia-China Investment Fund, Guotai Junan International, and CCB International. Since its spinoff from Didi Chuxing in August 2019, the company had raised over $1.1 billion in total funding as of early 2021, following a $500 million Series A round from SoftBank Vision Fund in 2020. The company focuses on developing Level 4 autonomous driving technology and robotaxis, with partnerships announced in 2021 to produce driverless electric vehicles with GAC Aion and to develop autonomous robotaxi models with Beijing Automotive Industry Holding (BAIC). By April 2021, Didi Woya released a video demonstrating five consecutive hours of autonomous vehicle operation without human intervention.
May 2020SeedSoftBank Group (lead); For Good Ventures$500M-Didi Chuxing, China's leading ride-hailing company, completed a funding round exceeding $500 million for its autonomous driving subsidiary, Beijing Woya Technology Co., Ltd. (also referred to as Didi Woya or Woya), on May 29, 2020. The round was led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2, marking the first external funding for the unit since its spin-off as an independent company in August 2019 from Didi's three-year-old autonomous driving team established in 2016. The subsidiary is wholly owned by Shanghai DiDi Woya Technology Co., Ltd., with 90% held by Didi founder and CEO Cheng Wei and 10% by Didi CTO Zhang Bo; Zhang Bo serves as CEO of the autonomous unit, with Wei Junqing as CTO. The capital is designated for advancing R&D and testing of autonomous driving technology, deepening partnerships with auto industry players, deploying robotaxi services in select areas in China and abroad, and mass-producing autonomous vehicles. This investment positions Woya to leverage Didi's extensive ride-hailing data and infrastructure, including smart charging networks, fleet maintenance, and insurance for autonomous fleets, addressing safety concerns following prior incidents and aiming to improve efficiency amid driver shortages. At the time, Woya employed around 200 staff across China and U.S. offices and planned autonomous vehicle tests in Beijing. The round is described as China's largest single investment in the autonomous driving sector to date. Woya had been catching up in testing mileage, ranking eighth in Beijing in 2018 behind Baidu, through aggressive development and government promotion efforts. The funding comes amid strong investor interest in autonomous tech, with comparables like Waymo raising $2.5 billion plus $750 million earlier in 2020, and Pony.ai securing $462 million in February. SoftBank's Vision Fund 2, launched in 2019, faced fundraising challenges following losses from Fund 1 investments like WeWork.
