May 2016Undisclosed stageAlibaba Pictures Group (lead)$153M$2.9BGuangdong Dadi Cinema Construction, one of China's leading cinema exhibitors, owned 313 cinemas with 1,662 screens as of April 2016 and had over 310 contracted cinemas set to open. In May 2016, it issued RMB1 billion ($154m-$154m) convertible bonds to Alibaba Pictures, granting Alibaba the right to convert into equity shares. The deal valued Dadi Cinema at RMB20 billion ($3.07 billion), nearly double its Hong Kong-listed parent Nan Hai Corporation. Beyond capital, the partnership included cooperation on movie promotion, marketing, e-commerce, and other film-related businesses to integrate Alibaba's internet capabilities with cinemas. In 2015, Dadi ranked second among Chinese cinema investment firms with attendance over 71.58 million and box office (including tax) of $338m (RMB2.2bn), up 47% year-on-year. For 2016, it reported box-office revenue (before tax) of RMB2,237 million, a 1.1% increase from prior year, capturing 4.9% of national box office and maintaining second-place ranking. The investment supported Dadi's 'Film+' strategy amid market consolidation. In January 2017, it acquired Orange Sky Golden Harvest Cinemas (China), boosting cinemas to 426 and screens to 2,442. Alibaba Pictures aimed to build a vertically integrated entertainment platform, extending e-commerce to cinemas for new revenue streams.
