SigmaRoc Overview

About SigmaRoc

SigmaRoc is a London-listed industrial-minerals group producing lime, limestone and construction materials across the United Kingdom and continental Europe. It operates a decentralised network of quarries, kilns and processing sites that sell quicklime, hydrated lime, aggregates and specialised mineral products. Customers include steel, chemical, environmental, agriculture, construction and infrastructure businesses. Revenue is generated predominantly from the sale of these processed mineral and building products. The group expanded materially through acquisitions, including its purchase of CRH's European lime operations, and organises the portfolio into regional operating platforms. Through its Buxton Lime business, SigmaRoc owns lime works at Tunstead in Derbyshire that are included in Peak Cluster. Lime manufacture creates unavoidable process emissions when limestone is calcined, so the proposed shared capture and transport network is relevant to the plant's long-term competitiveness. SigmaRoc plc invested directly in the Peak Cluster project company.

Peak Cluster
Material Evolution
Description
Peak Cluster is the project company developing a carbon-dioxide transport network for cement and lime plants in Derbyshire and Staffordshire. Incorporated in 2023 and registered in Stonehouse, it is owned by National Wealth Fund, four building-materials producers and a Sumitomo-Progressive Energy joint venture. The planned system will connect capture equipment at the Tarmac, Breedon, Holcim and SigmaRoc facilities to a new underground pipeline and then to Spirit Energy's Morecambe Net Zero offshore storage project. The network is designed to transport more than three million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. Peak Cluster is funding front-end engineering, permitting, regulatory studies and other development work needed before a targeted final investment decision. Its future business is infrastructure service provision to industrial emitters rather than cement production itself. The project companies say the full cluster would help preserve domestic cement and lime capacity and safeguard about 2,000 jobs at participating plants.
Material Evolution is a Nottingham-headquartered producer of ultra-low-carbon cements for ready-mix concrete and precast elements. Its MevoCem binder, developed via alkali fusion of steel slags, emits 144 to 196 kg CO2e per tonne, 85 percent below Portland cement. Founded in 2022, the company pilots facilities in the UK Midlands, achieving 28-day strengths over 50 MPa without workflow changes.
