Afyren Funding Rounds

DateStageRaised FromRaisedValuationRev. MultipleDeal Summary
Feb-19Undisclosed stageAFY Partners; Crédit Agricole; Julien Lopizzo; Sofinnova Partners; SuperNova; Valquest Partners$24M—Afyren is a French industrial biotech company that produces high-value bio-based organic acids, such as acetic, propionic, butyric, isobutyric, valeric, iso-valeric, and caproic acids, using a zero-waste fermentation technology called Afynerie on non-food derived sugar. The company completed a €21 million capital increase on February 12, 2019, led by Sofinnova Partners and Valquest Partners, with participation from Supernova, Crédit Agricole Création, Crédit Agricole Centre France, and historical shareholders AFY Partners and Sofimac Régions (Sofimac and Jérémie Innovation 1 and 2 funds). This equity round formed part of a larger €60 million financing package, including debt, to fund the industrial development phase and construction of its first commercial-scale plant with 1,000m³ fermentation capacity and 15,000 tonnes annual production. At the time of the round, Afyren had advanced through pre-industrial stages, delivering test batches to initial customers and generating interest from leading businesses in its sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based products. The funding provided resources to industrialize the technology, reduce CO2 emissions, and achieve competitiveness for industrial customers. New co-investors joined the board, supporting the transition to full commercialization. Later financial reports show revenues of €3,456 thousand in 2022 (up 14% from €3,036 thousand in 2021, including €1,417 thousand from licenses) and €1,364 thousand in H1 2024 (down 30% from H1 2023). Afyren listed on Euronext Growth in 2021, with Valquest Partners noting a portfolio exit on September 29, 2021.
