Krishna Institute Funding Rounds

DateStageRaised FromRaisedValuationRev. MultipleDeal Summary
Jun-18Undisclosed stageGeneral Atlantic$130M-Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS Hospitals) is a leading multi-disciplinary healthcare provider in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, operating multiple multi-specialty hospitals with over 2,500 beds as of 2018. Founded in 2004 by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Bhaskara Rao Bollineni, it had grown into one of the largest corporate healthcare groups in southern India by the time of the investment. In June 2018, General Atlantic acquired approximately 30-39% stake in KIMS Hospitals through a combination of primary capital and secondary purchase from ICICI Venture Funds Management, which had invested Rs 220 crore in 2014 for its stake. The transaction valued the company at around Rs 2,700 crore (approximately $400 million), up significantly from Rs 850 crore in 2014, with reports citing investments of $130 million (INR 850-929 crore) for the stake. ICICI Venture sold its 30% stake for Rs 850 crore. The investment supported KIMS Hospitals' expansion into underserved geographies amid strong sector tailwinds, including government-sponsored health insurance growth expected at 15% annually through 2020 and increasing bed capacity among large chains with over Rs 400 crore revenue. Post-investment, General Atlantic increased its stake with additional funding in 2019 and planned a partial exit via KIMS Hospitals' IPO in 2021, raising Rs 700 crore including fresh issue for debt repayment and growth initiatives. The hospital chain expanded bed capacity by 20% over three years post-investment, maintaining 80% occupancy.
Jun-14Undisclosed stageICICI Venture$36M-Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS Hospitals) is a hospital chain based in Hyderabad that operates multiple super-specialty hospitals across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. In June 2014, ICICI Venture acquired a 28 percent stake in KIMS through its Advantage Fund Series 3 for INR 2.2 billion (approximately US$36 million). The transaction included a fresh capital infusion as well as a secondary component through which healthcare-focused private equity manager Quadria Capital exited its earlier investment of INR 600 million made in 2009. At the time of ICICI Venture's investment, KIMS operated approximately 1,600 beds across its hospitals in Andhra Pradesh, including a 300-bedded super-specialty facility in Secunderabad. ICICI Venture's investment proved successful, generating approximately four-fold returns when the firm exited its 30 percent stake to General Atlantic in 2018 for INR 8.5 billion (approximately US$125 million), at which point KIMS was valued at approximately INR 27 billion.
