Deliverr Acquisition

Deliverr was acquired by Flexport for an undisclosed price on 4 May 2023.

Before the acquisition Deliverr had raised $591M across 7 funding rounds.

Flexport acquired Deliverr as part of Shopify's logistics business in May 2023 in exchange for a 13% equity stake in Flexport plus a $40 million cash infusion to Shopify. Deliverr provides tech-enabled e-commerce fulfillment and last-mile delivery services with a nationwide network of warehouses within 100 miles of half the U.S. population, enabling two-day shipping and easy returns for Shopify merchants. The deal positions Flexport to expand from freight forwarding into end-to-end port-to-porch logistics, competing with Amazon by integrating Deliverr's assets including 3 million square feet of warehouse space. Shopify had acquired Deliverr for $2.1 billion the prior year but later impaired its value to $774 million as part of a $900 million writedown on logistics assets including 6 River Systems. Flexport valued Deliverr at $1.04 billion in the transaction, higher than Shopify's post-impairment figure, though Flexport did not revalue its own business. Deliverr's co-founder and CEO Harish Abbott continued to run the operations, and Flexport became the primary provider for Shopify's Shop Promise fast-delivery feature.

On November 22, 2021, it announced a $250 million Series E funding round led by new investor Tiger Global, with participation from existing investors 8VC, Activant Capital, GLP, Brookfield Technology Partners, and Coatue. The round raised the company's post-money valuation to $2 billion, more than double its previous valuation from a $170 million round earlier in 2021, bringing total funding raised since 2018 to $490 million. The new capital is earmarked for accelerating commercial operations, expanding next-day fulfillment services nationwide to merchants of all sizes, scaling the fulfillment network, hiring engineers, data scientists, and operations experts, and enhancing predictive analytics tools for demand and inventory management. Deliverr's merchants achieved 90% year-over-year e-commerce growth, outpacing overall e-commerce rates, with strong demand for next-day and two-day delivery amid pandemic-driven shifts to online sales and supply chain challenges. This positions Deliverr as the best-capitalized and highest-valued player in e-commerce fulfillment and logistics. Tiger Global partner John Curtius highlighted Deliverr's edge in solving logistics disruptions while enabling next-day delivery and cost savings for merchants. The company was already well-funded prior to this round but pursued it due to strong investor interest, particularly from Tiger Global's track record in scaling high-potential enterprises.
