The company operates fiber networks and data center colocation facilities serving as critical infrastructure for digital communications. In July 2019, Zayo announced a definitive merger agreement to be acquired by affiliates of Digital Colony Partners and EQT Infrastructure IV fund in a transaction valued at $14.3 billion including the assumption of $5.9 billion in net debt obligations, translating to $35.00 per share in cash. The deal represented a 32% premium to the six-month volume-weighted average price and was the largest transaction in EQT's 25-year history at the time. The acquisition was unanimously approved by Zayo's Board of Directors and closed in Q2 2020, transitioning the company from public (NYSE: ZAYO) to private ownership under Digital Colony and EQT, positioning the newly private company to accelerate growth investments and strengthen market leadership in fiber connectivity and data center infrastructure.

| Date | Stage | Investors | Raised | Deal Summary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aug 2007 | Undisclosed stage | Oak Investment Partners (lead); Columbia Capital (lead); M/C Partners (lead); Battery Ventures; Centennial Ventures | $225M | Zayo Bandwidth, the fiber-network operator founded in 2007 by former ICG Communications and Level 3 executives Dan Caruso and John Scarano, announced on 30 August 2007 that it had secured $225 million in equity funding commitments. The round was led by Oak Investment Partners, Columbia Capital and M/C Venture Partners, with Centennial Ventures and Battery Ventures also participating, through a holding company named Communications Infrastructure Investments LLC. The investors committed the money as growth capital rather than a conventional venture round. The capital was raised to fund a roll-up of regional fiber networks: Zayo had already agreed to acquire PPL Telcom, Memphis Networx, Indiana Fiber Works and Onvoy, which together represented about $125 million of annual revenue and roughly 8,400 route miles of fiber serving carriers and enterprises in the eastern and midwestern United States. Zayo was headquartered in Louisville, Colorado at the time, later moving to Boulder. The company went on to complete dozens of acquisitions, raise further equity and debt, list on the New York Stock Exchange in 2014 and be taken private by Digital Colony and EQT in a $14.3 billion transaction in 2020. |
