SimpliSafe Acquisition

SimpliSafe was acquired by GTCR for $2.5B on 15 September 2025.

The acquisition price implies a 2.9x EBITDA multiple.

Before the acquisition SimpliSafe had raised $187M across 2 funding rounds.

GTCR, a leading private equity firm, acquired SimpliSafe, the third-largest residential security provider in the U.S., from Hellman & Friedman in a transaction that closed in November 2025. SimpliSafe, founded in 2006 and headquartered in Boston, pioneered the DIY home security space by offering self-installable security systems with 24/7 professional monitoring and no long-term contracts, serving millions of customers across the U.S. and U.K. This marks GTCR's fifth investment in the security alarm industry, following prior deals in residential-focused companies SecurityLink and Protection1, as well as commercial operators HSM and Everon. The deal represents a continuation of SimpliSafe's trajectory under previous owner Hellman & Friedman, with founders Chad and Eleanor Laurans remaining as substantial investors and board members. Upon closing, SimpliSafe appointed Hilary Schneider as CEO and Ty Shay as President, both experienced direct-to-consumer services executives, to lead the company's next growth phase with focus on product innovation, customer experience elevation, and expanded market reach. GTCR's strategy centers on advancing SimpliSafe's innovative product platform and accelerating growth while maintaining the company's core mission of keeping every home secure with the same exceptional service customers have come to expect.

DateStageInvestorsRaisedDeal Summary
Apr 2021Undisclosed stage-$130MSimpliSafe is a Boston-based company providing award-winning DIY home security solutions, including hardware like cameras and alarms with professional monitoring and no long-term contracts. Backed by Hellman & Friedman since 2018, it pioneered a self-install approach emphasizing customer satisfaction and subscription loyalty. In April 2021, it raised $130 million in growth funding led by existing shareholders, alongside extending revolving credit facilities, to scale engineering (hiring nearly 100 engineers to reach over 300), develop innovative technology, and drive market expansion. The company projected over 30% growth and more than $400 million in annualized recurring revenue for 2021. This funding built on prior rounds, including a $57 million Series A from Sequoia Capital in 2014 when revenue reached $38.5 million, and a $1 billion valuation deal with Hellman & Friedman in 2018. By 2021, SimpliSafe protected millions of customers and ranked highly in reviews. The round supported product innovations like enhanced monitoring and outdoor cameras launched around that time. SimpliSafe continued growth with new products like Video Doorbell Pro and Wireless Outdoor Security Camera in 2021, positioning it as a leader in the home security market amid rising demand.
May 2014Undisclosed stageSequoia Capital (lead); Alumni Ventures$57MSimpliSafe, a Cambridge, MA-based company founded by Chad Laurans, develops an easy-to-install, wireless, cellular, and customizable home security system that can be purchased directly online without contracts or telephone lines, designed for homes, apartments, or businesses. The company raised $57 million in a funding round on or around May 20-22, 2014, led by Sequoia Capital, with the motivation to scale operations and expand market reach. Sequoia made its first investment in SimpliSafe during this Series A or Series Unknown round following an intense bidding war handled by Raymond James. The 2014 investment positioned SimpliSafe to compete in the burgeoning do-it-yourself home security and automation market, boosted by Google's $3.2 billion acquisition of Nest Labs, which highlighted the sector's potential. SimpliSafe's out-of-the-box system had already garnered rave reviews and was installed in thousands of homes at the time. Subsequent rounds included a $130 million private equity raise in April 2021 to enhance technology and monitoring, a $200 million debt financing in May 2022 led by HPS Investment Partners (Blue Owl Capital), Owl Rock Capital, and Eastern Bank for growth and innovation, and a 2017 secondary market transaction for liquidity, bringing total funding to $387 million across multiple rounds.
